-------- M O D E M - 8 0 D O C U M E N T A T I O N -------- MODEM-80 is a "Public Domain" program that enables fast and error-free disk file transmissions between two TRS-80 Model I disk systems and based on the Ward Christensen CP/M MODEM.COM program. It has been substantially rewritten by Stan Misel to operate with the TRSDOS family of operating systems and it is NOT compatible with the CP/M version. ------------------ OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS ------------------- MODEM-80 sets all of its options during program initializa- tion by use of a command string. Enter the command string at DOS Ready prompt by typing MODEM, space, and then primary and secondary options. Primary Options: S - sends a file R - receives a file T - acts as a terminal E - acts as a terminal with echo H - lists abbreviated set of instructions X - lists examples Secondary Options: T - enter terminal mode after file transfer E - enter echo mode after file transfer W - pause execution to allow user to switch disks . - set baud rate A - perform multiple file transfers without exiting program Q - quiet mode - does not screen print status messages R - show all data received S - show all data transmitted V - view file sent or received ----------------------- FILE TRANSFER ----------------------- To transfer a file via MODEM-80 the person sending the file types "MODEM S FILENAME/EXT". MODEM-80 automatically loads, initializes the RS-232 at 300 baud, and prepares to send file "FILENAME/EXT" to the receiver. To receive a file via MODEM80 the person receiving the file types "MODEM R FILENAME/EXT". At this point the two computers are able to communicate with one another and the file will be transferred a sector at a time. If a sector has been garbled during transmission, it will be resent automatically. If the receiver enters "MODEM RV FILENAME/EXT", the file is also displayed on the screen while it is received. If the receiver enters "MODEM RR FILENAME/EXT", then status messages as well as header and checksum info are displayed. If a printer is linked to the display it might be desirable not have status messages displayed during a file transfer. If this is the case, use the "Q" suboption. ------------------------------------------------------------- MODEM-80 also has a "dumb terminal" mode that is entered by typing "MODEM T". In this mode MODEM-80 allows communication with BBSs and timeshare computers. Communication with another TRS-80 also using MODEM-80, requires one of them to be in the echo mode which is invoked by typing "MODEM E". ------------------------------------------------------------- Terminal and echo modes may also be entered upon completion of a program transfer by using suboption "T" or "E". This can be especially handy when usIng MODEM-80 with a BBS. ------------------------------------------------------------- If you have only one drive and the file you wish to send is not on the same disk as MODEM-80 enter suboption "W" to allow switching disks before MODEM-80 opens the disk files. * W A R N I N G * When utilizing suboption W ensure disk in Drive 0 contains same DOS otherwise system will most likely bomb and possibly damage the disk ------------------------------------------------------------- Suboption "A" allows multiple file transfers without return to DOS after each transfer. After the first file transfer the system prompts for a new filespec. Press in response to "new filespec" to abort. ------------------------------------------------------------- The TRS-80 RS-232 is normally set at 300 baud. MODEM-80 can modify this value with suboption "." The variations are: .F - 1200 baud operation .S - 110 baud operation .0 - Skip previously established RS-232 settings ------------------------------------------------------------- To abort MODEM-80 hold down CLEAR - all files will be closed! ------------------------------------------------------------- A cassette-port-driven amplifier will prompt when MODEM-80 requires your attention! -------------------------------------------------------------
