I intend this for those JNSE fans who would really like to be able to play Augusta along with the pros during Masters weekend. After I get some good videotape of this year's Masters, I'd like to do a thorough updating to make this a top notch revision, at which time I'll ask Ted Maiden to replace this intermediate version. I hope some of you get some enjoyment out of this, and PLEASE let me know of any comments or problems you see so that I can try to work them into my final release. I do plan to widen some of the holes in my final release to compensate for the increased difficulty of JNSE over JNUG. LEE RITZE                       NOTES ON AUGUSTA NATIONAL (REVISED) Course Name: Augusta National Golf Club, annual home of The Masters Location: Augusta, Georgia Length/Par: 3,465/36 - 3,440/36 - 6,905/72 Designer: Alister Mackenzie, Robert Tyre Jones Jr. Difficulty: Moderate. Fairway are wide, but greens are tough. So what else is new about Augusta National. Thanks to: Dale Somerfelt: Once again I thank Dale for the background from his fine version of English Turn. Scott Chesney: for his pines, and for his fine rendition of Augusta that so many of us have enjoyed since last winter Rod Harris: for his flowering bushes JNUG Design: Lee Ritze (VIALEE on Accolade and Genie BBS's, TKNK81A on Prodigy) Sources: The World Atlas of Golf Courses (ISBN 0-792-45284-4) The Yardage Card: OUT IN HOLE PAR YARDS HOLE PAR YARDS 1 4 400 10 4 485 2 5 555 11 4 455 3 4 360 12 3 155 4 3 205 13 5 465 5 4 435 14 4 405 6 3 180 15 5 500 7 4 360 16 3 170 8 5 535 17 4 400 9 4 435 18 4 405 ___ _____ ___ _____ 36 3,465 36 3,440 Augusta National was the course I wanted to design last winter when I first got JNUG. After struggling for several hours with the "Build Hills" functions of the Designer, I decided I wasn't up to it and went on to less ambitious fare. A couple months later I discovered the Accolade BBS and Scott Chesney's Augusta. It has always been one of my favorites. I was lucky enough as a teenager to be able to attend The Masters in 1969 and 1971. Besides the beauty of the flowering trees and bushes in April, the most memorable aspect of Augusta National is THE HILLS. I've never lost the desire to do a version of the course that reflects my memory of the elevation changes that impact nearly every hole at Augusta National. And after 10 or more courses I finally feel I'm enough in command of the "Build Hills" functions to create the looks I like. I also wanted to do Augusta in the style of my Seminole and Shinnecock Hills... showing the adjacent fairways, tees and greens that are visible from each hole being played. This design strategy makes for an ugly land plot, but I hope you'll decide that that sacrifice is worth it for the more realistic views you get while actually playing the 18 holes of golf. Unlike the links-style courses of Seminole and Shinnecock, Augusta National is cut out of the woods... many times I found myself wishing I could have 200 objects per hole instead of the 90 limit imposed by JNUG. Oh well. After Muirfield Village, where I intentionally tricked up the course to make it tight and difficult, I went back to modeling as realistically as I am capable of for Augusta. The result is an easier course which you should be able to shoot well if you can read greens and hit lag putts. I personally get a great kick out of playing boldly and scoring well at Augusta National... pretending that I'm really battling Jack for the green coat. It's nice to have Jack scoring under par here too. He shoots more like 80 on some of my other courses... and it takes some of the fantasy out of battling Jack for the Masters to have him shooting 80. All in all, I hope I've created a course that is fair, that you'll find appealing to look at, and that you'll enjoy coming back again to play from time to time. It's been great fun for me to make.
