COURSE: Cape Fear Golf & Country Club YARDAGE: 7156 yards from pro tees LOCATION: Somewhere in the Carribean DESIGNER: Rod Harris with help from Lonn Iris This course was partly inspired by the Ryder Cup Tourney. I wanted to produce a course that was somewhat open and yet retained the challenge. The course plays along a stretch of ocean know as Cape Fear. Many a ship has tasted it's sting. Others have been saved by the lighthouse that stands vigil at the tip of the cape. The wind has swept across from the sea creating sand dunes. As you go more inland stretches of rocks form barriers. The clubhouse was built overlooking this area. The background was the work of my friend Lonn Iris. It is completely original and features among things a pirate memorial to Blackbeard who once roamed these coasts. They even maintain an old Frigate as homeage to Edward Teach. The rugged area is enhanced by the coastline as well as mountainous inland. The objects are a collection of many designers redid a bit to meet the needs of the landscape. Only the jagged rock is truly original. Many holes number less than 40 objects and yet do not appear to suffer. The course winds through the dunes on the front and the rocks on the back. I may have got carried away with the rocky effect but I hadn't seen it done to a great extend. Course rules allow swearing on the greens and prepare yourself. This course was designed for 30+ putts per round. The greens are large and I have tried to leave many of the placements near the center of the green so 30' putts are common. On a few holes it maybe wise to lag. Included with this course is a caddy's guide showing distances of traps, size of greens, where to land to improve putting and strategy tips. If you desire this print CAPEFEAR.CAD. This course is being made available via the PCGA WINTER SHOOTOUT. I have included the scores from that tournament and you can compare how you would have done. CAPEFEAR.R is hole by hole scoring Capefear.s is breakdown of each hole of birdies, pars etc. Also included is a text file about the PCGA.
