COURSE NAME: Crooked Stick Golf Club LOCATION: Carmel, Indiana DESIGNER: Pete Dye JNUG DESIGNER: Scott Chesney ACKNOWLEDGEMENT: Thanks to Robert Vasilik for the use of one of his trees from LaCosta. I don't often borrow trees, but I like the gray one I took. Crooked Stick is an interesting course, if only for the reason that it was Pete Dye's first use of his famous railroad ties, which have become his trademark. Anyone who has tried to effectively design those railroad ties for JNUG know the special problems that go with getting them to look halfway decent when actually laid out on the course. I have tried again here. Frankly, I chose to do Crooked Stick only because it was site of the 1991 PGA and knew that Accolade's version would be pathetic, which it was as always. As I started, I was a bit bored, but as time went on, I actually began to like the course. It has some wonderful par 3 holes and some very challenging par 4's. I think the par 5 holes are too easy and mark the downfall of Crooked Stick. Still, it is an interesting course. I used this year's version of THE MAJORS SERIES, a hole by hole description of the course, with pictures and drawings of the topography and greens. I have attempted to duplicate the greens as described, so please don't think I just made them up in terms of the undulations. I added a caddy to my list of objects and made extensive use of a new maple I designed. I also modified a huge tree I designed earlier for Pebble Beach and the Country Club. Hopefully, you'll like the course and find it a suitable challenge. I intend to do a revision after I tape the PGA tournament. I have begun work on Poppy Hills, the course that replaced Cypress Point on the Bing Crosby tournament played at Pebble, Spyglass, and Poppy Hills. I wanted to finish that triad. In the future I have many projects awaiting, including doing Medinah #3 using many source materials. I will also do Shoal Creek and perhaps Riviera. Who knows. Can't wait for the new version to come out. Scott Chesney 27 Edgerly-Garrison Road Durham, New Hampshire 03824 (Moto on the Accolade BBS)April 20, 2005
