Notes on "DHL" -- May 30, 1992 Course Name : Dead Horse Lake Location : Set in Western Canada (Fictional) Length/Par : 7,230 yards / 36-36-72 JNSE Design : Bill Permenter (Original design) Difficulty : Rating - 73.7 / Slope - 137 Inspiration : Banff Springs Hotel Golf Course Alberta, Canada, and the layout of the course as it appears in the "New World Atlas of Golf". Also, Jay Johnson's JNUG course "Canyon Rim". Comments about the course: This was the first course that I did for "JNUG" in the summer of 1990, so I thought it would be a good idea to convert this course of mine first to the new program -- "JNSE". Also, I was able to obtain some great objects from Gene Rodriguez III, and later I came upon a great background by Mark Willett (I think you will agree with me that my edited version of his background is a perfect match with my course. It looks as though it was made for it from scratch -- thanks Mark! I had done my own background, and I think I may use it for a later course.) The course is completely my own design, and I have worked on it for over two years. I think that this "JNSE" version is quite hard, but for the most part a fair test of golfing ability. I think if you can break par here from the back tees you've done something. Personally, since Ned stole 10 yards from us, I play mostly from the "blue tees". Very short walk thru: 1) Fairly easy first hole -- stay right, most trouble left. 2) Longest hole on course, exaggerated dogleg -- three shot par 5. Lots of trouble near the green, but birdies come to the patient. 3) Carry the bunker complex in this generous fairway and your setup to conquer this baby. Bunkers near green collect a lot of balls. 4) My "favorite hole" on the course -- a very "tranquil" setting. Small green can be hard to hit. 5) The fun over -- here is where the tough get going, and the going gets tough. The second shot here to the green is my "favorite shot" on the course. I also, love the views from the green. 6) A very long par four, which is very hard. The water behind the green is a nice change, also watch out for the "doughnut" trap near the green. 7) At first this was the "signature hole" till I built the 14th. I think the strength of this course is the par threes -- I believe that all are excellent (I hope I'm allowed to say that!). 8) In my opinion, the "openness" of this hole is a nice refreshing change. You can pickup some strokes here. 9) Toughest drive on the front nine -- the 18th plays much the same. 10) Hole reminds me of 17th at Medinah -- green is highly sloped back toward the water. I love the view! 11) Fairly long par five with no bunkers -- fun hole. Stay out of the two w's and you may make a birdie. 12) Hole was very tough to build with the two waterfalls and island green. I think it turned out well -- I hope you agree. 13) Grandest tee shot of all. Very hard to get close to this pin -- hole is often bogeyed. 14) Now starts the canyons -- "Signature Hole". I hope you like it. 15) Lay-up drive -- but a long second shot. The difference here is the green is tucked back into the canyon away from the water. 16) Originally built to pattern the 17th at St Andrews -- not so much with this version, but still a tough hole. Too far left off the tee and your in trouble, too far right and your still blocked by a tree -- hit a straight drive. 17) Great hole to pick up strokes -- make a par here and you're going backwards. 18) Toughest drive on the backside -- a great test to end your round. Latta road, Big Muddy, and Black Smoke Canyon (actually Black Oak) comes from my all time favorite movie -- William Wyler's 1958 "The Big Country" -- the greatest western ever made. It starred Gregory Peck, Charlton Heston, Carroll Baker, Jean Simmons, Burl Ives, and Frank Bickford. Ives won the Academy Award for best supporting actor, but they were all great. Wyler's next movie was "Ben Hur" -- with Heston, of course. I strongly urge you to see it if you haven't. I hope you enjoy the course. Thanks.
