Notes on "DH_SE.Zip" -- October 12, 1992 Course Name : Deane Hill Golf Club & Resort Complex Location : Set in southern New Zealand (Fictional) Length/Par : 6,787 yards / 35-37-72 JNSE Design : Bill Permenter (Original design - loosely based on Deane Hill CC in Knoxville, Tn.) Difficulty : Rating 71.3 / Slope - 130 Inspiration : The course of my youth - Deane Hill CC. I can now play my old club anytime I want! Comments about the course: This is a complete rebuild of my "Deane Hill CC" for "JNUG". In the last four months I have spent over 200 hours on this layout, and I feel that this is the finest work I've done. When I began the project I had two goals: 1) Adapt the course of my youth to "JNSE" -- so I can go back and walk those fairways again. 2) Design a course that was challenging, but yet was not nearly as hard as my first offering -- "Dead Horse Lake". (I want to be able to shoot some 65s) When I adapted this course for "JNUG" I designed it to be almost exactly the way it was in the 60s, except that I embellished it with extra bunkers. But, when I started this "JNSE" project I decided to move the locale, and to cull some of the weaker holes and then totally redesign them. The following holes are very close to the real Deane Hill: 1, 2, 6, 9, 10, 12, The following holes have the same flavor as the orginals, but have been changed significantly: 4, 5, 7, 8, 11, 13, 14, 18 The following holes are entirely new designs: 3, 15, 16, 17 My favorites: 1) Second shot from the hill at 2. (Who says Links looks better? - This is a great view!) 2) Drive on the 4th. (Prevailling crosswinds force one to start their drive at the bunker in order to find the fairway. Can Links top that?) 3) Drive at the 7th. (The adrenalin rushes as the ball flies!) 4) Tee shot at the 9th. (Again the adrenalin rushes as the ball flies - "will he make it?") 5) Drive at the 10th. (In the trees or OB right -- or maybe bunkered left -- or a perfect drive 300 yards rolling down the fairway. Never this much fun with "Links Pro"!!) 6) Second shot at the 13th. (Can you get on in two?) 7) Every shot, every putt at the 16th. (My favorite hole ever -- worked out better than I ever imagined.) 8) Tee shot at the 17th. (A beautiful setting.) 9) Second shot thru the slot at the 18th. (Great to look at from the reverse view -- I love the green!) Special thanks to the following people for making this project possible: 1) My lovely wife, Joan. (For allowing me to buy a 486 just to play golf -- I talk a good line!) 2) Ned Martin - great software, great digitized trees! 3) Mark Willett - still my favorite all-time background to edit! 4) Gene Rodriquez III - a great, great spruce or pine tree! 5) Scott Chesney & Lee Ritze - for giving me ideas that I saw in some of their courses! Other things of note: 1) Canapoli River - came to me out of the blue. 2) Lake Foree - named after the late great old pro at Deane Hill -- "Lloyd Foree". 3) Cook's Creek - named after my old golfing buddy "Barry Cook" -- where are you Barry? 4) Bungalows were drawn from the Clubhouse at Sherwood. 5) The Chip, Putt & Sand course that is beside the 11th can be played. (Please download my "DH_CPS.zip") 6) Course was designed for "30 resolution" (Please judge views from tees with full resolution on). I hope you enjoy the course. Thanks. Bill Permenter (713) 353-6227 Prodigy - GSTM14E Next - I'm presently working on another original design -- "Beggars' Island" set in the South Pacific. I still may do "Ballybunion" -- but I'm enjoying designing my own courses. Also, I still may convert more of my old courses.
