English Turn Golf & Country Club New Orleans, Louisiana JNUG Designer: John DeFraites Actual Designer: Jack Nicklaus 20 August 1991 In the year 1699, war raged between England and France. Coloniztion of the Mississippi River was considered paramount by both sides, and the Canadian- born LeMoyne brothers led the French effort near New Orleans. In September of that same year, an English warship, the "Carolina Galley," began an expedition up the Mississippi. With five men and two canoes, the French successfully bluffed the 12-gun vessel into reversing its course and fleeing downriver. The bend in the river where this historic event took place was named "Detours Des Anglais" or English Turn. The name has endured almost 300 years. Good story, eh? Construction began on English Turn in 1986, and in 1989 it became the new home of the PGA's USF&G Classic formerly at Lakewood Country Club. The site chosen by Nicklaus was one that featured the typical Southern Louisiana landscape--wetlands. Amazingly, this complex ecosystem filled with beauty is only 15 minutes from downtown New Orleans, and is within the corporate boundries of the city of New Orleans. Why did I recreate this course on JNUG? Simple. Because I live here in Southern Louisiana. English Turn is where I see my PGA golf live and in person. I really like this course. Jack did an excellent job with it. It is built, and sucessfully done, as a "stadium" or "arena" golf course. There is almost never a problem with getting a good view of the action. An interesting feature of English Turn is that every hole has water. In almost every situation water dictates what the player will do next. Shots must be thought out and planned accordingly. My other two are Schumm Valley GC and Valley of the Sun G&CC. They are both fictitious. Schumm Valley was completed in September 1990 and Valley of the Sun in July 1991. Yes, I am slow as hell. I concentrate on details and just by nature work very slowly. My source material for English Turn was "The Player's Guide to English Turn," brouchoures (with plan views), USF&G Classic Program from the tournement, and my notes and memory of being on the course during the USF&G Classic. Jason LeBeouf and Jeff Porche also took part in the recreation of English Turn. I want and need criticisms, complaints, or, basically in- put on this design. Who knows? Again, enjoy!
