COURSE: Heartbreak Ridge DESIGNER: Dave Salamon TYPE: Original/Fictional (Course...not designer) DATE: October 28, 1992 Yardages: Silver: 6992 Blue: 6754 White: 6387 Red: 6018 After d/l courses from all the great designers out there, I decided it was about time to try to pay you all back with an original design. I tried designing with the original JNUG when it first came out and was quite pleased with my results. Then I got hold of a modem and found out about the 19th Hole and the Double Eagle BBS. Once I saw what the state of the art was, I became thoroughly discouraged and downright depressed. I wasn't even in the same ball park as these guys named Willet, Ritze, Chesney, Maiden and others. Still, I thought I had some good ideas and once JNSE came out I just had to give it a try. This first design is what I finally came up with. This course was designed to play fairly easily. I tried to use the elevation aspect to keep the ball in play for all but horrendous shots. I made the fairways fairly wide and kept the heavy rough far away but it still can be found. I also tried to resist the temptation of placing trees right next to the fairway to force lots of fades and slices. The greens are large with not too many severe breaks. I don't think you'll see many (if any) putts with a "15" break. But I did try to make the greens somewhat of a challenge. Trying to design this course to look real tough but play like a pussycat proved fairly difficult and I hope I at least partially succeeded. In Western PA, I think some of our prettiest courses are located in the Laurel Mountains about 80 miles East Of Pittsburgh. With this type of location in mind, I came up with an original background to try to reflect a course that sits up high upon a ridge. I used a low tree and mountain background to try to assist in obtaining this feeling. (In reality, I think that some of the mountains are too high and steep for this area... but I liked them so I left them in there). The objects are all borrowed or modifications of the work put in by other designers. I spent hours and hours trying to come up with my own objects but they always looked like crap. So, I wish to thank the following designers for creating these objects so that designers like me can borrow them: Small Pine Scott Chesney Banff Springs Small Tree John Sandoval Doral Kerry Liebowitz Large Tree Ted Maiden Mocassin Small Pine Ted Maiden Mocassin Flowers Mark Willett Alhambra Ball Washer/Bench Mark Willett Alhambra Large Pine Brian Silvernail Rolling Evergreen Flowers Brian Silvernail Rolling Evergreen These were the courses from which I imported the objects. It is somewhat difficult to always tell who exactly was the designer who created a particular object. If I missed anybody in the above accolades...I apologize. I want to thank Jim Dutton (aka Ranger1) and Ted Maiden (aka Maker, aka Devil Dawg) for taking time to preview this course and make recommendations. I also wish to thank Mark Willet for some advice he gave me a long time ago about be willing to put all the time necessary to make a good design. I hope that you consider this courses worthy of your d/l time. Any comments or criticisms of this course will be sincerely appreciated. I can be reached through Prodigy . My ID is JWDV23A.
