COURSE: WAIALEA COUNTRY CLUB LOCATION: HONOLULU, HAWAII SPECS: PAR 72 6881 YARDS JNUG DESIGN: ROBERT VASILIK This effort is dedicated to Tom Mui in Honolulu, Hawaii. We've never met, but I saw his name the other day on a BBS and it reminded me to quit being depressed about being away from paradise, and get my butt in gear and design Waialae. Now I'm just more depressed! Waialea CC ( pronounced WHY'-A-LIE), is located on the island of Oahu. It was designed around 1926 by C.B. Macdonald. It plays host annually to the United Airlines Hawaiian Open in January/February on the PGA Tour. Trees are both borrowed and my own. My biggest gripe with JNUG Designer is that you can't really use alot of different objects. Waialae has some of the largest variety of trees and plants in one place on the island. Greens at Waialae are fairly large, sandtraps are usually quite deep. Wind is a major factor, though I have set the wind to Moderate. Tradewinds blow all the time and winds change direction frequently on the course. Most of the time the wind should be set to Strong. Waialae sits next to the Hilton Hotel in the Kahala District of Honolulu; which is on the windward side of the island. Greens shouldn't be too difficult to putt, though in reality, they are usually very fast. I have placed only 1 pin on each hole and that is in the center of each green. That gives an accurate hole measurement. You put them where you like and add others. Background is entirely my own modified extensively from memory. Waialae sits on a stretch of beach that is some high class property. I have placed the stone wall around most of the course as it really is. On the other side of the wall are some of the biggest, most expensive homes on the island. I've left them out. Too much headache trying to design them in. Hole 18 finishes looking at the back of Diamond Head crater. Other holes face toward Koko Head around Hawaii Kai, the Pacific Ocean, etc. I lived in Hawaii for 5 years and will return in 18 months when I retire from the Air Force. I visited Waialae many times (just drive out to the Kahala Hilton, park in the lot, walk across the street to the clubhouse, and you are in one of about a thousand beautiful spots in Hawaii). Just ask Tom Mui. My thanks to Scott Chesney in Durham, New Hampshire; Jay Johnson in Laguna Beach, California; Lee Ritze in Carrolton, Texas; and Tom Mui in Honolulu, Hawaii. I collected some great objects from these guys as well as entire courses. You gotta be nuts not to have EVERYTHING these guys put out! This was my third attempt to recreate a course and I'm very happy with the results. Along with this course, I've uploaded two other recent creations: 1. LA COSTA CC in Carlsbad, California site of the first stop each year of the PGA Tour for the Tournament of Champions. 2. ROYAL MELBOURNE GC in Victoria, Australia site of the Australian Open from time-to-time. When time permits I'll be working on MEDINAH CC (last years US Open); OAKLAND HILLS CC (this years US Senior Open) and maybe a really accurate and realistic ST ANDREWS GC (last years British Open). I have some good source material for all three and might get to them before the end of the year. I can be reached on EXEC-PC and COMPUSERVE. Aloha.
