Course: Locals' Country Club Designer: Michael Cruikshank Setting: Hawthorne, California. Far (or near) Future. Length: 7798 yards (Pro Tees) Par: 72 (37-35) History ------- Locals' Country Club rose out of the ashes of what was once the Hawthorne Mall. Being finally fed up with the clientele that the mall was attracting, the Hawthorne Locals decided to do something about it. Unfortunately, a slight miscalculation in the amount of nuclear material used in our little surprise packages (strategically placed in the Hawthorne Sux theatres, Electronic Africa and Hot Frog on a Stick) caused widespread nuclear mutation. So you may see numerous large animals watching you as you drive and putt. Hordes of ravenous rabbits lurk about the fairways, although one usually looks surprised to see you. Extremely large tracks belonging to various unknown creatures have been spotted on the fairways and greens. Also unbeknownst to us, the people of Planet X left Godzilla in some sort of suspended animation beneath the mall's parking structure. So when the explosi...uh accident occurred, it naturally woke ol' Fire Breath up. He can be seen stomping through what used to be El Segundo (no loss). The other activity being seen is the Locals' Air Force doing a little neighborhood redevelopment in Lawndale. A few former and current land marks are also visible in the background. With the destruction of the mall, peace and happiness have once again returned to Hawthorne. It's easy to get a tee off time at Locals' Country Club, and hopefully you won't get stuck behind the mutant with two heads, because he can never decide on which club to use. It is my first attempt at designing a course and originally wasn't meant for public consumption. But everyone who's played it has enjoyed it and it is better than some courses I've downloaded from Accolade and other BBS's. At first I started out with the intention to create 18 whimsical holes all having some sort of special meaning for each of the Locals (my friends). Unfortunately I wasn't that creative and couldn't think of 18 specific things. So some of the holes are a little on the crazy side (#6 & #11 being prime examples) and others are just interesting and hopefully challenging holes. The front nine came together pretty quickly, but the back nine took a bit more work. I changed several of the holes numerous times and finally settled on what you see here. The course was designed to be played from the men's tees and this seemingly tame course can turn mean if you play it in dry conditions with fast greens. I hope you enjoy playing it as much as I enjoyed the challenge of designing it. Stay tuned for Locals C.C. #2! Credits: ________ As with most designers I have "borrowed" objects to enhance the visual effects of Locals' Country Club. Most of the stuff is straight out of Accolade's Course Designers Clip Art Vol. 1, but there are some objects that I don't remember exactly where they came from. I'm sure you'll recognize your own works and I thank you for them. I would like to thank Chuck White for his special artistic and humorous contributions to the background. Thanks to Leslie Stroh of his ideas for some of the holes and for his extensive play-testing and also for letting me grab a chunk of hard disk space on his bulletin board (Locals' BBS!: 310-973-1817) to start my own JNUG (& SE) file & message base. And a Special Thanks to my girlfriend Laurie for putting up with me and all those hours I've spent in front of the monitor. See ya on the green, Mike Cruikshank, co-sysop Locals' BBS! Hawthorne, CA.
