Notes on the L O N G J O H N ' S Nicklaus course, JNSE version. This course was designed and built by: Paul Conrad 279 El Portal Way San Jose, Ca. 95119 Prodigy RHJG42A First, with apologies to Ted and some others who may be critical of the extremes with this course, a few words about the course design principles for Long John's. 1. This course is intended to be a challenging practice layout with emphasis on improving course management. These unique holes, with a variety of final pin locations on small greenlets will test your shot planning and execution with a variety of putts - none extreme. 2. The course must be attractive. All objects have been upgraded or replaced from the original JNUG version. 3. The course should look as though there is life around, not simply lifeless woods, grass, and water. 4. The course should be interesting and retain your interest. Holes like these are rarely seen and the added thought required for how to play them makes touring LongJohn's a unique experience. With heavy use of multiple greens it's difficult to remember how to play each shot. Some of the greens are tiny islands but usually have sand at the back to help keep you dry. This course is not for beginners! My pin positions may be challenging but they're not outlandish. You can miss the putt and not have a 50' comeback. 5. This is computer golf! Indeed! I think we need to exercise the computer and build holes that would be far too difficult or costly to really build and not worry how we get to some islands. We'll walk on water if need be. With over 10,000 yards and the string of par 5's on the back side this course's a monster. NOTE: If you don't want to disturb your cumulative player stats, you may want to create a separate player for this course since the Par 85 could distort some of your stats. Changes from the JNUG version are as follows: - The background is Scott Chesney's from Banff - perhaps the nicest around! - All objects modified or replaced. Objects borrowed from: (Thanks designers!) Cog Hill, Si Ma Tai, Gabrielle Gardens, Scorpion, & Harbourtown. Since most were already borrowed I have no idea who the original object designers were - but thanks for the contributions! - Tees reset for JNSE. - Some water carries shortened to allow for JNSE's shorter carry. - Traps deepened in some places, water elevation improved, most pins were reset and balanced across the course. - More objects added and shuffled around. -- In other words, most everything, BUT the hole layouts, changed. ******************************************************************************* This course is built for free distribution. It may be copied to other no-charge bulletin boards but may not be distributed for charges greater than nominal copying expense. ******************************************************************************* Now, About L O N G J O H N ' S. 1. What an opener! Decisions right away. L, R, or middle plays depending on pin position. Don't overshoot the center, or underdo the edges. 2. Par 3 with lots of little target greenlets to shoot at. 3. Massive par 5 dogleg with a hard-to-spot shortcut for the very brave AND good. 4. Narrow canyon needs some mild hooks with all kinds of grief if you can't make the shots. . 5. A simple tee shot opens a whole array of possible 2nd shots. 6. The "Signature Hole" with a long carry to safety. I particularly like this tee arrangement. 7. The second shot is key here. You must hit a big hook. The tiny island green was a bit of an afterthought. 8. Shots to these islands are easier than they look, but not if you're new to the game. 9. A real thinker's hole. There's opportunity for gambling and lots of ways to go wrong. 10.This is a super testy hole and probably the #1 handicap. Going for the main fairway in two works if you had a big drive. But, pin position greatly changes the way you play this. 11.I love this hole. Stay in control and pick your second shot placement with care. Islands of rough with 2-3 trees in them have become a favorite course feature. 12.At least two big shots over water. This hole is easy though. 13.The mini-fairway was originally built for Natasha of JNUG fame. She couldn't carry the water! Par is a good score here. 14.Maybe a chance to gamble here but this makes 5 easily if played with care. 15.This hole is mostly fairway with selected patches of trees, sand and water. Picking the shots is first priority and making them comes next. 16.A careful tee shot, then you must plan with care. Interesting! 17.One of my favorite styles of hole. You can play either bank but they're both quite tight. Going back and forth works and may give more room but adds length to a long hole. 18.A grand finishing hole. A little of everything. Great scenery and lots of places to go wrong. I hope you enjoy L.J.'s. If you would like to exchange course disks drop me a line or send a message to RHJG42A on Prodigy. Paul aka Treefrog on Accolade
