Nahabino Golf Course Location: Nahabino, Russia Type: Non-Fiction Length: Out: 3447 - In: 3402 | Total: 6849 Difficulty: Moderate to Easy JNSE Layout: (c) 1992, Gene Rodriguez III The town of Nahabino is located 18 miles from Moscow. In the late 1980s, Robert Trent Jones Jr. was commissioned to create an 18 hole, championship golf course here. A group of mayors from nearby towns formed a coalition and by public condemnation forced farmers to sell their land to be used for the course. My rendition of this course is based on a beautiful color route plan found in the book, The World's Best Golf by William H. Davis. This book is a fine resource for object and background creation, as it contains mostly pictures. The route plan for Nahabino measures 4.4" x 4.3" and is scaled in meters, but after a little conversion and enlargement, was perfect for use as a source for this JNSE course. Centerlines, contour elevations, scorecard, trap and tee configurations were all present on this plan, and made its rendition quite enjoyable. The background is another Deluxe Paint II Enhanced creation. Using the Brush and Smooth commands, I was able to create the "fuzzy" layer of the background. I then brushed over this layer with scaled down objects. This gives the background (I think) a sort of 3D effect that adds depth to an otherwise flat canvas. The first time I saw this background on the course, I was instantly reminded of the old GAF ViewMaster I had as a kid. If you've seen one, you may be too. All objects are original except for the golfers. They were captured from "live" action shots of the JNSE golfers, then scaled and recolored to fit. The birches come from a set of objects I created some time ago, GR3OBJ02.ZIP. If you need a birch tree, this file contains about a dozen or so... one should match your needs. The rest of the objects were created for this course and reflect (I hope) the types of trees native to the European forest setting I was trying to recreate. A NOTE ON PLAY: Since the fairway contours were taken directly from the route plan, some allowance must be made in JNSE game play for the tendency for the ball to roll quite a bit. A few rounds and some careful study of the course should allow you to traverse the rolling fairways of Nahabino without much trouble. This course reflects my interpretation of a single source, and as such, can only be construed to have a limited amount of accuracy. I'd love to have more information on this course. I don't even know if it was ever completed! The route plan is dated 1988, and the book, published 1991, makes it sound like progress is slow. This course then, is an expression of hope. That the Commonwealth of Independent States can get its act together. That the course gets built. That an oppressed people can get to the point were they can afford the luxury of an afternoon on the golf course. Thanks to Mike Rochman for the comments and encouragement. To my wife Ann for her patience and support. And to Boris and Natasha for their invaluable playtest help. I hope you enjoy your round(s) on Nahabino, and that you found it worth the cost of the download. I'm ALWAYS willing to hear your comments and criticisms, so don't hesitate to get in touch.
