COURSE: Osprey Point LOCATION: Kiawah Island, S.C. DESIGNER: Tom Fazio JNSE DESIGNER: James Farber Thank you for downloading this course. This is the first design that I have felt enough confidence in to upload. I think it is a very accurate represent- ation of this course, although some aspects are missing, as I will explain in a bit. I was lucky enough to have played this course twice in September 1992, on a vacation to Kiawah. I also played the Ocean Course, and believe me, Ted Maiden has done an incredible job in capturing the golf experience there. Osprey Point is definitely a resort course, so it is not overly difficult. However, when the course is played from the championship tees (which are so rarely played that they are not even on the scorecard), Osprey can be a monster. When playing in strong winds, the golfer must birdie those holes on which he has the wind, because he will surely have to scramble when he plays into the wind. Accuracy is also very important (when isn't it?), because of the large amount of water on the course. Osprey is routed through wetlands and lakes that border nearly every fairway. Fazio has exploited this natural hazard a great deal, especially on the drives. Many holes require a drive to a fairway bordered laterally by water. But while this water provides a great challenge to the computer player, it is also a hindrance to the computer designer. Unusual terrain, such as wetlands or desert, is probably the hardest aspect of a golf course to replicate on the computer. I tried very hard to simulate the types of grasses and other plants that grow in wetland areas, but it did not turn out very well at all. So while I feel that I have recreated the actual golf holes accurately, I know that I have not captured the tremendous natural beauty of Osprey Point. Of course, the bottom line is fun and challenge. I think this computer version of Osprey Point will provide both. I hope you enjoy the course, and I look forward to uploading more courses. I recently played Aronimink and Commonwealth National, and will soon bring those to JNSE. Please contact me if you have any comments or questions (or advice).
