Royal St. Kitts Golf Course Location: St. Kitts, West Indies Type: Non-Fiction Length: Out: 3495 - In: 3598 | Total: 7093 Difficulty: Moderate to Simple JNSE Layout: (c) 1992, Gene Rodriguez III Located in the Leeward Islands of the Lesser Antilles, St. Kitts is a lush, Caribbean paradise. Extinct volcanoes tumble down into tropical rain forests which flow into rolling sugar plantations, all of which gaze out upon beautiful Caribbean and Atlantic beaches. Formerly known as St. Christopher (Columbus named it after his patron saint), the island changed its official name to St. Kitts (its nickname) in 1988. St. Kitts is just beginning to develop its tourism industry, but boast a rich and colorful history full of exploration and colonization. I was lucky enough to spend an extended week at this island paradise in the early fall of 1991 as a honeymoon with my wife, Ann. We stayed at the Jack Tar Village Beach Resort and Casino which allowed free daily access to the Royal St. Kitts Golf Course, located in the Frigate Bay area of the island. Ann, and I spent quite a few afternoons playing on this great course and I thought it only fitting that it be one of my early JNSE efforts. Royal St. Kitts, as befits a resort course, doesn't pose too great a strain on ones golfing abilities, but still manages to challenge while at the same time making one pause through out the round to take in the wonderful island scenery. For a fairly simple course, RSK has a uniformly long set of par threes. This quartet of holes will make you stop enjoying the view and start bearing down on your game. This course provided me with several great rounds and also some great memories. I have never, nor do I expect to ever again see a cow come walking across the green as I walk up to inspect my putt. I'll also keep with me the memory of having monkeys for a gallery on my tee shot on #4. Design notes: Thanks to Mark Willet for the palm trees... although I extensively recolored them, they have the truest object "shapes" of any I have seen. For those who take an interest in such things, the two peaks visible on the opening screen shot are Monkey Hill and Verchild's Peak. The entire time I was on St. Kitts, these mountains remained cloud covered. I hope I've done a good job of recreating this effect. Visible to the south is the island of Nevis, a smaller island that is home to a course designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. Hmmm, maybe for our "second" honeymoon... I hope you enjoy my rendition of Royal St. Kitts, and have fun on your round(s) here. I had a great time creating it.
