Notes on Shadowdale -- January 16, 1991 Course Name : Shadowdale Location : The Forgotten Realms (ficticious) Length/Par : 6,990 yards / 36-36-72 JNUG Design : Barry Edmonds Difficulty : Moderate Inspiration : The town of Shadowdale in a ficticious land called The Forgotten Resalms. (Copyright TSR, Inc.) Comments about Shadowdale: The Forgotten Realms is a ficticious world developed by TSR, Inc. for their Advanced Dungeons and Dragons game system. Shadowdale is a small crossroads farming town in an area of The Realms known as The Dalelands. The area is mostly temperate forest land with occasional clearings, especially where farms have been developed. There are a few named land features in Shadowdale which have been mentioned in the hole descriptions in this course. These are: The Ashaba River, the main waterway running through town. The Old Skull, a large barren hill near the center of town. Watcher's Knoll, a small mound northeast of the town. Harper's Hill, a high point of land used for ceremonial meetings. The Millpond, where the sawmill is. Mistledale Mount and Shadow Ridge, other small hills. Ruins of Castle Grimstead, castle ruins. One feature, the dry lake bed, does not exist in the original Shadowdale design by TSR. I made that one up. This course is a standard par 72 course with two par 3 and two par 5 in each nine holes. The majority of the hole designs require an accurate initial drive. Many holes have the opportunity for the "heroic" drive which, if done well, rewards the player with an excellent chance at a birdie or eagle. However if the "heroic" drive is off target, the next shot could be very difficult. I have playtested this course with no wind and found it not too hard to break par, however, a strong wind could severely change the play aspects of some of the holes. One common feature of all the holes is the wide rough areas so hitting out of bounds is not very common. This is compensated for by the obstacles (trees, water, traps, etc) that border the fairways. This is my first attempt as designing a seriously thought out course. I hope you will enjoy playing it. Good luck and happy golfing. FORE!!!! Barry Edmonds Poway, Calif (near San Diego)
