SACHA'S FIRST KILL

With 59 kills, Col Alexander "Sacha"
Pokryshkin was the Soviet Union's second
highest leading ace, and one of only
three men to be triply decorated
as a Hero of the Soviet Union.  His first
kill was against a Bf109 in the early
days of the war, when he and his wingman
came upon 5 Bf109s, three below and two
above.  He climbed to the upper pair and
quickly destroyed one, but while watching
it fall, mesmerized by the stricken
plane, the wingman came around on his
tail to get revenge.  Taking damage, he
went low and "hedge-hopped" his way home.

plane survives, as aircraft are
desparately needed to hold back the
oncoming German juggernaut.
