OVER THE KUBAN On April 21, 1943, during the Kuban Bridgehead struggle in the Crimea, an IL- 2 Shturmovik crew learned the dangers of flying without fighter escort. Pilot N.V. Rykhlin and his reargunner I.S. Yefremenko of the 805th Ground-Attack Air Regiment were flying a mission against German ground targets when they were jumped from above by four German fighters. As they struggled to get back to Russian lines, Rykhlin was wounded and Yefremenko managed to down two of the Germans. Finally landing at a Soviet airstrip, both were later awarded the Gold Star. MISSION You are to destroy at least 4 targets in the designated target area, which represents a German assembly area. Consider the mission a success if you can do that and your plane makes it back to friendly lines. NOTES This is a normal day mission. SCENARIO DESIGN BY Gregory M. "Sturmer" Smith x
