Hartmann and the P-39 Ace In April 1943 Erich "Bubi" Hartmann was bounced by two groups of P-39 Airacobras near Nikolaev, Russia. Unfortunately, his new wingman was a Major Guenther Capito, who was recently transferred from bombers. Capito kept making "bomber" style turns instead of the tight turns that fighter pilots make, and was promptly shot down by a Russian ace. Hartmann quickly got revenge for his wingman, who, by the way, is the only wingman of Hartmann's that was ever shot down. After the battle, the pilots went to the crash site, which was behind German lines, and found a dead Russian pilot with over twenty thousand German marks (cash) in his possession and 25 victories painted on his fuselage. MISSION You are about to be jumped by two groups of P-39Q Airacobras, one flown by a Hero of the Soviet Union (the requirement for this award being about 20 or more victories). Consider this mission a victory if your wingman survives (lives) through the mission. SOURCE "The Blond Knight of Germany" by Toliver and Constable DESIGNED BY Gregory M. "Sturmer" Smith
