300 DOWN AND THE DIAMONDS On 23 August 1944, about eight kilometers east of Ostrowiez, Erich Hartmann made history by downing no less than aircraft on a single mission, raising his kill total to 301 victories. Running into a group of "Airas" (slang for P-39Q Airacobras), Hartmann downed 4 of them, and a few minutes later encountered a group of Pe-2 Divebombers escorted by some fighters. After getting one of the Pe-2s, Erich returned to base in order to "waggle his wings" 5 times over the squadron field. This feat earned him a trip to Hitler's headquarters and the award of the Diamonds to his Knight's Cross. MISSION Engage the P-39's which are on patrol, then hurry over to catch the Pe-2s before they bomb their target. Consider this mission a victory if you can down 5 planes and therefore equal Hartmann's mark. Consider it a decisive victory if you can stop the Pe-2s from destroying more than 3 buildings in the target area. SOURCE "The Blond Knight of Germany" by Toliver and Constable.
