20 TO 2 NEAR JASSY

In southern Russia, Rudel takes off on a
"solo" mission (just he and his wingman)
looking for tanks near Jassy.  As he
approached the target, he found a warm
reception - about 20 Russian fighters,
all Airacobras.  Rudel loses sight of his
wingman in the wild effort to escape,
which involved ground-level flying among
some ravines.  Things got worse when W.O.
Rothmann (his rear gunner) had a jam,
which left him even more defenseless.
Finally the Russians give up the chase as
Rudel approached his own lines, but not
after having received numerous .50
caliber hits and 8 of the 37mm cannon
hits from the Airacobras.
As an aside, after this harrowing
experience, Rudel flew another sortie
that day and knocked out 9 tanks.

            MISSION

Return to friendly lines alive.

This is a normal day mission.
