HOW TO USE THE RUSSIAN FRONT MODULE ver. 1.1 The Russian Front Module is composed of a complete set of substitute files for SWOTL to make it seem as if you were in the Soviet Air Force. The 12 aircraft included can be flown "individually" as long as the special .INT and .PNL files are copied to the \SWOTL\CP subdirectory, but I think you will enjoy it much more if you play the Russian Front as a "package". You will earn Russian rank, and be eligible for Russian decorations for bravery. The only problem so far is the fact that the Soviet planes must take off and land from Allied bases in England and France. You must therefore disregard these names, and just imagine that they are actually Russian bases. There is a section of "Friendly Territory" northeast of Berlin in the April 45 map in the mission builder, if you wish to utilize it. However, I'm sure that soon a way to make an eastern Russian airfield or two will be discovered. Until then, that is the worst "unreality" of the module. The aircraft have been painstakingly created using the best available historical data. The only area of concern is ammunition amounts; I tried to make them logical when I had no hard facts. TO USE THIS MODULE: First, make a backup copy of all your U.S. aircraft, and the following German a/c: FW190A8, Me163B, HE162, GO229. Tom Philo recommends using COPY P51B.SPC P51B.ORI and so on. ORI stands for original. BAK is bad, since debug automatically creates a file with that extension if you ever debug the file. Next, make backups of these files, and copy the Russian files over them: SUBDIR FILE RUSSIAN FILE \SWOTL NOTCAMP.OVL RUSCAMP.OVL FRONTEND.OVL FRONTEND.RUS \SWOTL\FE MENUS.PAC MENUS.RUS CREDITS.PAC RUSSCRED.PAC BAMERSTR.PAC RUSSNSTR.PAC BRIEFSTR.PAC BRIEFSTR.RUS HISTG.PAC HISTG.RUS HISTA.PAC HISTA.RUS CAMPTEXT.PAC CAMPTEXT.RUS \SWOTL\AC VGA.PAC SNOWMAN.PAC or NITEOWL.PAC or SUNSET.PAC (or leave alone for normal day) P38H.SPC SB2.EXP P38J.SPC PE2.EXP B17G.SPC PE8.EXP P51B.SPC P39Q.EXP P51D.SPC YAK9D.EXP P47C.SPC IL10.EXP P47D.SPC LA7.EXP P80.SPC MIG3.EXP FW190A8.SPC BF110G.EXP ME163B.SPC HE111.EXP GO229.SPC JU87G.EXP HE162.SPC HS129B.EXP It is important to use the mod planes in the listed .SPC files, if you'd like the map icons, historical missions, campaign game, and tours of duty to be correctly labeled. Next, copy these files into the SWOTL\CP subdirectory. They are accessed directly by the modified .EXP files and no swapping is necessary: P39Q.INT SB2.INT MIG3.INT IL10.INT RUS.INT RUSW.PNL RU2W.PNL RUSBW.PNL JU87.INT BF110.INT HS129.INT ME410.INT Next, copy these files into the SWOTL\AC subdirectory. They will be used directly by the modified .EXP files and no swapping is necessary: SPIT4.PAC SPIT4S.PAC JU88A1.PAC JU88A1S.PAC HURR2.PAC HURR2S.PAC JU87G.PAC JU87GS.PAC ME110A.PAC ME110AS.PAC HE111D.PAC HE111DS.PAC DO17.PAC DO17S.PAC Next, copy all of the missions and their accompanying txt files into the \SWOTL\MIS subdirectory. Yes, the \SWOTL\MIS subdirectory. These historical missions will be accessed directly by the Russian front module via the "historical missions" option on the menu: 11HS129.MIS 11HS129.TXT 11HE111.MIS 11HE111.TXT 12HS129.MIS 12HS129.TXT 11IL-10.MIS 11IL-10.TXT 13HS129.MIS 13HS129.TXT 12IL-10.MIS 12IL-10.TXT RUDEL11.MIS RUDEL11.TXT 13IL-10.MIS 13IL-10.TXT RUDEL12.MIS RUDEL12.TXT 14IL-10.MIS 14IL-10.TXT RUDEL13.MIS RUDEL13.TXT 15IL-10.MIS 15IL-10.TXT RUDEL14.MIS RUDEL14.TXT 16LOBOV.MIS 16LOBOV.TXT STUKA15.MIS STUKA15.TXT 11YAK9-D.MIS 11YAK9-D.TXT 1BUBI-1.MIS 1BUBI-1.TXT 12YAK9-D.MIS 12YAK9-D.TXT 1BUBI-2.MIS 1BUBI-1.TXT 13YAK9-D.MIS 13YAK9-D.TXT 1BUBI-3.MIS 1BUBI-3.TXT 111COBRA.MIS 111COBRA.TXT 1KURSK1.MIS 1KURSK1.TXT 112COBRA.MIS 112COBRA.TXT 1KORSUN.MIS 1KORSUN.TXT 111PE-2.MIS 111PE-2.TXT 112PE-2.MIS 112PE-2.TXT 113PE-2.MIS 113PE-2.TXT 111MIG3.MIS 111MIG3.TXT 112MIG3.MIS 111MIG3.TXT This is all you need! Just make the necessary file swaps, and start your Russian Front! OTHER FILES INCLUDED: The russia.ico file is a Soviet flag for use with Windows 3.0 or 3.1. The (PLANE).TXT files are explanations of each plane's characteristics. They are ASCII text files and can be printed out or merely read on the screen. They are not really necessary for the module, although are helpful. The RUSSIA.bat and NORUSSIA.bat are batch files to activate and remove the Russian Front (after this initial installation, which is a manual process.) RETURNING TO NORMAL: All you need to do is swap back the "normal" SPC files and the .PAC and .OVL files, and you've returned to normal. I would recommend making a batch file that does it all with one stroke, ie call it "RUSS.BAT" Or use the enclosed batch files, RUSSIA.BAT and NORUSSIA.BAT to activate and remove the module. RUSSIAN RANKS: The Soviet ranks you may earn are: Leytenant (LT) Starshiy Leytenant (1LT) Kapitan (CPT) Mayor (MAJ) Pod Polkovnik (LTC) Polkovnik (COL) General Mayor (GEN) RUSSIAN AWARDS: The Soviet awards you may earn are: The Order of the Red Star The Order of Honor The Order of the Great Patriotic War The Order of the Red Flag The Order of Victory The Order of Lenin Hero of the Soviet Union (technically, this would be the Medal of the Golden Star, which confers the title "Hero of the Soviet Union" on its bearer.) Enjoy! Created by Gregory M. Smith, Rob Hollingsworth, with special graphics by Anthony Shimizu. The He111, Ju87G, and Bf110 were originally created by Keith Heitmann. Gregory M.
