The names and descriptions of available databases can be listed by selecting C)hange_database. Essentially, the database menu allows you to access a database that the sysop has placed online. To begin accessing the currently selected database, just select B)rowse; this will display the current data to the screen. You can also change the layout of the data by selecting the R)eport_format command. More advanced features involve F)iltering on data fields to select which records from the database to display, M)aking a report file and D)ownloading the file, etc. The steps to creating a report are: 1) Select a database with the C)hange_database command. 2) Select a report format. This determines how the report will look and how the data from the database is displayed in the report. 3) F)ilter the report. This process gradually weeds out information you may not want. 4) M)ake the report. The report is created using the format you selected and for all the records included by your filter. 5) You may now V)iew the report on-line; D)ownload the report to your machine; or start over at any of the steps 1..4 or 4) B)rowse the database to the screen. The only difference between Browsing and Viewing is that a View looks at a report file that has been completed on disk; the Browse command displays to the screen as it searches the database and does NOT leave a report file for downloading. :3C [C] Change current dataase There may be many different databases available on the board. You must select the database you wish to work with. :3D [D] Download a report file Once you have M)ade a report file, you can download the results to your system. After selecting D)ownload, you will be asked for the protocol to use. :3F [F] Filter on a specific field In order to make a report, you must first specify which data in the database to include in the report. This is done by "filtering" the data on various fields of the database. For example, consider a database list of all bulletin boards in the country. If you wanted a list of all programming boards, look for "program" in the name of the bbs. Or, if you wanted only local boards, you could search for boards whose phone numbers begin with your areacode. Filtering allows you to: - select all records - unselect all records - select a field and a data range - select a field and a data phrase :3G [G] Goodbye - Logoff This command is available in all subsystems. It is used to terminate the remote session. You will be given the opportunity to enter any comments or questions to the sysop. When this is done, the system will disconnect, and display the amount of time the call used as well as your NetMail account balance, should you have an account established that will allow you to send NetMail. :3H [H] HELP command On each main system menu there is a [H]elp command. By typing H and return, you will be shown a menu of brief commands that are similar to the Menu commands. Some will be expanded slightly. If the user needs additional help with a specific command on the menu displayed, then the user can type the letter H, followed by a space and then the Letter that expanded Help is needed. This will display additional information about the command in question. :3L [L] List the fields in the current database In order to understand the data in a database, it is sometimes necessary to know what the data fields in the database are called. This option will list the names of the fields in the selected database. :3M [M] Make a report file This is the option that actually creates the report file. Before you can VIEW a report, you must first make it. Note that if you only want to see the data on screen (if you dont plan to download a report to your system), the B)rowse command will serve better than M)ake. :3R [R] Select a report format Information from a database can be displayed in any of several pre-defined formats. :3S [S] Sort the current database The SORT option is not available at this time. :3V [V] View a report file After you have selected a report format and have made a report, you can view the output using this option. You can also elect to send the report to your computer. (see [D]ownload command) :3B [B] Browse the database You can quickly see the database and the records you've selected by Browsing the database to the screen. This command works exactly like the M)aking a report file except that the data goes straight to the screen instead of to a file. :4 The system found your name in the list of unacceptable names, you are now being politely logged-off. Goodbye......... :5 The following one letter commands are available from the Main Menu. When this command is entered, the system will try to summon the sysop (if during the chat period). If the sysop is available, you will be notified and a two way conversation may begin. If the sysop is not available or if the current time is outside the hours to chat, you will be given the opportunity to leave a message. If you answered "Y" to the IBM ANSI Graphics question, then the Chat mode will be in a split-screen mode, whereby the Sysop will be typing in the upper window and the user will be typing in the lower window. A "N" or default answer to the Graphics question will result in a normal non-split-screen Chat. :5D [D] Open a door This command may or may not work on the particular system that you are calling. After typing "C", enter the name of the desired message area or enter "?" and to get a menu of the message areas available. If the entry cannot be found, a short version of the menu will be displayed and the system will once again prompt for the message area. :6D [D] Download XRS Mailbag You will be asked: "Do you want to Download an XRS mailbag? (y/N) >>" Hit ENTER (default N answer) to abort or type "Y" for yes to continue and you will be asked: "Enter Area Name or # (? for List)" Enter the Name or # of the Message area you wish to download to your XRS mailbag. (A "?" will display the available message areas and associated numbers.) You will then be given the opportunity to select an option for reading. "Read Search Option (a,f,t,n,s,q,?)" ( ? will show the options to you.) If there are no messages found, that meet the above criteria, you will be told "No messages for you" or if there ARE messages to download you will see the message "Use which compression method?". Enter /Save /Quit /Edit on a blank line to /Save the message or /QUIT to abort or /Edit to make corrections or additions to the message. To edit type "?" to see the editing menu commands. One important thing to keep in mind is that if a message area is an "Echo", then any message that you enter will go to hundreds of other Bulletin Boards. For this reason, it is important to make sure that you are in the correct message area before entering messages. :6F [F] Files system menu This command transfers you to the Files subsystem and shows you the command prompt for that subsystem. :6G [G] Goodbye - Logoff This command is available in all subsystems. It is used to terminate the remote session. You will be given the opportunity to enter any comments or questions to the sysop. When this is done, the system will disconnect, and display the amount of time the call used as well as your NetMail account balance, should you have an account established that will allow you to send NetMail. :6H [H] HELP command On each main system menu there is a [H]elp command. By typing H and return, you will be shown a menu of brief commands that are similar to the Menu commands. Some will be expanded slightly. If the user selected "N" or the default answer to "Check for new mail (y/N) ?" question at logon, then the user would not see any new mail addressed to him/her. :6Q [Q] Quick-scan messages After typing "Q", the system will prompt for the starting message number. If the message number cannot be found, the system will start with next sequential message unless the requested number is outside the range displayed in brackets. In that case, the system will start the scan with the next message after the highest message read the last time you logged in. If the message is addressed to you privately, a "*" will be displayed. If the message is public, a ":" will be displayed between the number and the topic. Following the prompt for Msg#, you will be asked for any text to search for. Press RETURN for all messages or enter text that TPBoard will search for in the subject fields of the messages. :6R [R] Read message(s) Enter "R", and this command will prompt for the following information about reading messages. All commands are just for the Message Area you are currently in. Read Search Option [press "?" for menu]> ll rom you o you umeric ince uit After entering a letter the system will respond by showing the header of the first requested message, then prompt: Read (y,n,c,p,+,-,q,?) > es o ontinuous

revious <+> <-> uit If you select o, then you will not read the message. If you select one of the commands that displays the message, then after you have read the message, you will see: Action (r,d,n,p,CR,?) > eply elete ext

revious :6S [S] Scan messages This command is similar to quick-scan. In addition to the number and topic, the sender and receiver will be displayed. :6T [T] Toggle to Add and Delete areas in Combined Upon selecting "T", you will see this message on your screen: Areas marked with "*" are in your Combined message area. You can toggle areas on/off by selecting them. No selection means quit. As an example: 1*POST 7*ARNEWS 11 ARTALK 13 PASCAL 15 TPBOARD 16*FDDEV Those areas marked with a * are active in the Combined Message area. The above display is automatic and remains within a loop UNTIL a non-selection is entered (blank ). If the selected area has a "*", it is turned off; and vice versa. :6U [U] Upload an XRS mailbag Upon selecting [U]pload, you'll see: "Prepare to upload XRS packet now." and on the next line: "Protocol is currently Q, Change it ?". A No or N will use Q protocol, Yes or Y will display the temporary protocol prompt "Temporary protocol (x,1,b,z,g,q,?)" These translate to the following: X-modem - 1k Xmodem - Ymodem Batch - Zmodem - Ymodem G - Xmodem 1k G :7- [-] Main system menu This command returns the user to the Main Menu. :7 Functions available for expanded HELP [A] - Open/Close an archive, type a filename (extent not needed), to either [T] Yype the ASCII readme's, doc's or download and individual file to your system [C] - Change to another FILE area, a "?" shows available areas select by number [D] - Download a file to your system, if you know the name you can download from any file area, the system will locate the file and download it to your system [F] - File descriptions displays a filename and one line description [G] - Goodbye command - disconnect and terminate BBS session [L] - Locate files (partial name OK) - looks for a file in all areas [M] - Return to message system menu [N] - New files on system, these are files recently uploaded [P] - Protocol change allows you to change your default protocol [Q] - Quick-scan, checks for phrase in a filename and/or description [R] - diRectory (DOS Dir command) [S] - Sort files by name - ext - size - date - name is default [T] - Type an ASCII .DOC or .TXT file [U] - Upload a file to this BBS, the file will be sent to a private file area and remain hidden until it has been checked and released [V] - Verbose directory, shows size and creation date [Z] - siZe or DL time toggle, changes the R (dir command) from size to time :7A [A] Arc/Lbr/Zip/Pak/Lzh entry/exit Archives are used to place a group of related files in a single file known as an ARChive file. The compression of the data saves time on file transfers, and also helps cut down on the amount of disk space used. In order to simplify archive usage on this system, the "A" command may be used to "enter" an archive. When this is done, the system will prompt for the archive filename and then attempt to open the file for use. If successful, all subsequent Files subsystem commands will relate to the files within the chosen archive. The other files in the present File Section will not be accessible. If not, an appropriate error message will be issued. If you are already in an archive, entering "A" will cause the system to close the archive and return to normal display of the files in the present File Section. :7C [C] Change file area When you first log in, you will be placed in the "LOGIN" files section. (In the Message system, there were message areas; here we switch the terminology to Sections.) To access other files sections in the system, use this command. After typing "C", enter the name of the desired file section or enter "?" to get a menu of the file sections available. If the section name cannot be found, you will see a list of the section names available and the system will once again prompt for the area name. If you are in a compressed file (see next description) when this command is entered, the compressed file will be closed before the system prompts for the new section. :7D [D] Download file using default protocol - (TPBoard --> you) (download) After entering "D", you will be prompted to enter the file name of the program you want sent to your computer. If the system can find the file in the current area, it will display the transfer time and then the message "Ready to send..." At this point, if you are not using batch protocol, you must initiate the download from your end. When the file transfer is complete, the system will return to the Files subsystem prompt. You can request files that are not in the current files section. If you are using a batch protocol, you may request a series of up to 10 files, each of which may be in different files sections. :7F [F] File descriptions This function will give a list of files that are in the file section you are currently in, and a one line description of each file. There is a file search option in the [F]ile list command. This will keep you from having to scan the entire list just to get a description of a specific file. The search option supports partial names and will show all files that match the partial name. If [N] is selected for no search, you will be shown a full screen of file descriptions. FileName.Ext No: nnn mm/dd/yy Downloads: nn Size: bytes or if [Z] toggle Size/Time option had selected DownLoad time, then the "Size: bytes" would be replaced with "Dl Time: mm/ss". On the last line of the display there are several options that are new to TpBoard: C)ontinuous (no pauses in display), Q)uit (return to the system prompt, I)nfo (display extended description if available) M)ark (up to 20 files can be marked for download), (0 marked) shows how many files you have marked for download and CR) for next page. :7G [G] Goodbye - Logoff This command is available in all subsystems. It is used to terminate the remote session. You will be given the opportunity to enter any comments or questions to the sysop. When this is done, the system will disconnect, and display the amount of time the call used as well as your NetMail account balance, should you have an account established that will allow you to send NetMail. :7H [H] HELP command On each main system menu there is a [H]elp command. :7L [L] Locate file(s) This command allows you to search through all available file sections to locate a particular file or file group. Partial filenames are accepted, DOS wildcards are not. :7M [M] Message system menu This comand returns you to the Message subsystem . :7N [N] New files list After entering this command, you are prompted for the number of days previous that you want the listing to stop at. If you just hit return, the list will show only those files that have been uploaded since you were last on. The three line format is as follows: 1. FILENAME.EXT FILE SECTION UPLOAD DATE NAME OF UPLOADER 2. TIMES DOWNLOADED LAST DOWNLOAD DATE 3. [----------------75 CHARACTER DESCRIPTION OF FILE----------------] The File Section name is entered by the sender to tell the sysop where the file should eventually be stored. If a file is listed as "GAMES SECTION", after upload it will stay in the NEWIN section for a while and then be moved to the GAMES section. (The Section names here are only an example, and may not exist on all systems.) :7P [P] Protocol This command will allow you to change the default file transfer protocol that you selected on your first login. You will be prompted for a new protocol, and can hit '?' to obtain a listing of the available protocols. TPBoard uses the default protocol that you have set whenever it performs file transfers. You can change it for the current transfer only by giving the command followed by the protocol letter. For example, if you default protocol was Zmodem, and you wanted to switch to Ymodem Batch for this upload only, you would give the command 'UB' instead of 'U'. :7Q [Q] Quick-scan This function works essentially the same as the Locate command in that it will search ALL file areas. However, where Locate asks whether you wish to search for any files by the leading characters of filenames, Quick Scan prompts for a phrase to locate anywhere in the filename OR description. If you enter MODEM as the search string using Locate, you would find all files whose names begin with MODEM. If you enter MODEM as the search string using Quick Scan, you will find all files that contain the phrase MODEM either in the filename or description. :7R [R] Directory of files This command alphabetically displays the directory of files for the current section. If you are in a Lbr, Arc, Pak, Zip, or Lzh, then only those files contained in that compressed file will be displayed, otherwise, the Section directory will be displayed. The file size will also be displayed according to the current filesize mode (see filesize description). :7S [S] Sort files method By selecting S at the files prompt you will shown the options for sorting the current directory. These files will be displayed, sorted, by the [R]aw dir command or by the [V]erbose command or by the [F]ile description command. The options are: N)ame, E)xt, S)ize or D)ate. :7T [T] Type a file (includes compressed member files) An Text file is one that contains readable characters rather than machine code. This command may be used to display the contents of these files. You will be asked if you want page breaks which will pause the display at the number of lines per page as set in your user parameters. Xon/Xoff may also be used to pause the display. NOTE: This command may be used to transfer readable files even though your computer does not support the Xmodem protocol. If your machine has a feature to 'Capture' what is printed on your screen, you can use it to get the file transferred. :7U [U] Upload file using default protocol (you --> TPBoard) (UPLOAD) This command allows TPBoard to receive a file from you. The System will automatically respond using whatever protocol you chose as your default. Files will be received in a private area for Sysop approval before being released for others to download. If you are enrolled in a conference section, TPBoard will write files that you send to the conference section directly. They will be immediately available for other conference members to download. Type the [U] command and then the file name if requested. TPBoard will tell you the disk space available and it is Ready to Receive. After the file transfer has completed successfully, TPBoard will ask for a Section designation and short description of the file. The file will remain hidden until it is released by the Sysop. :7V [V] Verbose directory This command alphabetically displays the directory of files for the current section. If you are in a Lbr, Arc, Pak, Zip, or Lzh, only those files inside of the compressed file will be displayed; otherwise, the Section directory will be displayed. This display differs from the [R]directory display in that the filesize is shown in bytes, not kilobytes, and the time stamp of the file is shown. One file is listed per line. :7Z [Z] Filesize/time display Initially, the file sizes in the directory display will be shown in "k" (1024 bytes). The system can also display file sizes in minutes and seconds of transfer time (based on the current modem speed). Each time this command is entered, the system will alternate between these two methods. :8- [-] Main system menu This command returns the user to the Main Menu. :8 Functions available for expanded HELP [-] - Return to main system menu [E] - Change from full screen editor to line editor (toggle) [F] - Display file system menu [G] - Goodbye command - disconnect and terminate BBS session [M] - Return to message system menu [S] - System usage statistics, displays a graph of usage vs time of day [T] - Time and date display [U] - User listings lets you see a list of current users of this BBS [Y] - Your statistics shows a display of your user record [Z] - Graphics on/off lets you change from ANSI color to monochrome :8E [E] Change your type of message editor If during the course of your logon, you selected the Full Screen Editor and later on in your session you decide to change to the Line Editor. Answer Y or N to change. :8F [F] Files system menu This command transfers you to the Files subsystem and shows you the command prompt for that subsystem. :8G [G] Goodbye - Logoff This command is available in all subsystems. It is used to terminate the remote session. You will be given the opportunity to enter any comments or questions to the sysop. When this is done, the system will disconnect, and display the amount of time the call used as well as your NetMail account balance, should you have an account established that will allow you to send NetMail. :8H [H] HELP command On each main system menu there is a [H]elp command. :8M [M] Message system menu This comand returns you to the Message subsystem. :8S [S] System usage statistics This command displays a bar chart of the percent of system usage by hour. From the information on this chart, you can plan your calls for times when the system is less busy. :8T [T] Time and date This command will display the current time and date, the amount of time spent on the system today, and the amount of time remaining today. :8U [U] User list Alphabetically list all the validated users on the system. This is useful if you are capturing screens with your comm program or reading messages in a continuous mode. :9O [O] - Change number of columns This option will allow the user to change the number of columns that his screen will display. Default is 80 col. :9P [P] - Password change If for some reason, you suspect that your password has been compromised, you may change the current password to a new password. Don't forget to update your comm prg. :9Q [Q] - Quit command This command will quit the editing functions and return you to the Utility Menu. Any editing changes that you have made WILL NOT be saved to the permanent user record and the current defaults will be restored. :9R [R] - Clear screen This option will permit you to clear the screen before a menus is displayed. Cleans up screen captures. :9S [S] - Your current State of residence If you have moved to a different State since you first logged on to this BBS, we would appreciate having you update your user record with this option, thank you. :9X [X] Expert mode toggle This feature may or may not be enabled by the sysop on your board. If it is enabled, and you are in expert mode, you will NOT be shown the full menus automatically. In other words, to get a full menu, you would have to enter '?' at any prompt. If you are not in expert mode, menus will automatically display for you. New callers operate in non-expert mode (Novice mode) until they decide to turn off the full menus. Note, however, that the sysop places a restriction on the number of on-line hours you may use Novice mode (non-expert mode). :9Y [Y] Enter or edit your birthdate By selecting this option the user may enter a different or corrected birthdate. At present this BBS will require the user to re-enter his birthdate after every 5th log-on. This is an additional security measure to insure that some other unauthorized person does not use your name in the event that your password has been compromised. :A Are you an old user or a new user? Read on... Your name wasn't found in out list of existing callers. If you are already a caller here and you entered your name incorrectly, you may answer 'N' to the following question and try again. If you started your login process with a "handle", please answer 'N' and login again with your real name. Handles are not allowed on this system and those registering with handles will not be validated. (If your confused, this means you must use your real name!). If you wish to be a on-going caller here, you MUST provide a real name with a real phone number where you can be verified. Handles or fake names are absolutely not allowed here. I will probably NOT call all new users but will delete any user who's name appears to be a handle. :C Alter User Parameters Menu: [A] Change your address [-] Main system menu [B] Toggle bell after prompts [F] File system menu [C] Change your city name [M] Message system menu [D] Display your user data [F] File (save) your changes [L] Lines per page [S] Change your state abbreviation [O] Change columns/screen [X] Expert/novice menu toggle [P] Password change [Y] Edit your birthdate [R] Auto-clear screen [Q] Quit to main system menu any [H] HELP with this menu change you made are not saved [G] Goodbye - Logoff [#] Phone number change :D Since you are not a validated user, you can only leave messages to the sysop. It supports file transfers using the Xmodem, Ymodem G and Zmodem protocols. If your terminal program supports Zmodem, I suggest using it. It is the most robust transfer protocol available. You may enter a message to the SysOp, then the system disconnect. Please let the SysOp know if you have password problems. :R TPBoard's full screen editor requires that you be using an IBM compatible computer, and that you have your terminal program in it's ANSI BBS terminal mode. It uses the standard WordStar commands. It will allow you to use ALL of your function and cursor control keys if your terminal program has a "Doorway mode". If you do have a "Doorway mode", toggle it ON when using the editor, and OFF when done. If you want to use the full screen editor, answer yes to the following question. :S Sorry, but you are only allowed to send (download) files from the "LOGIN" file area. This is because you are either an Unvalidated user, or the Sysop has decided to turn your download privileges off. If you are an Unvalidated user, please try again when you see that you have been validated by the Sysop. :U Utility System Menu: Commands Other menus [E] Change your message editor [-] Main system menu [S] System usage statistics [F] File system menu [T] Time and date [M] Message system menu [U] User listings [Y] Your Statistics [H] HELP with this menu [Z] Graphics On/Off [G] Goodbye - Logoff :W Welcome to +----------------------------------------------------------+ | | | TPBoard -- The Professional Board | | | | The only board with powerful online database access | | | | v7.0 released December, 1991 | | v7.1 released April, 1992 | | v7.2 scheduled June, 1992 | | | +----------------------------------------------------------+ :X ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Board Room Sysop System Menu TPBoard v7.1 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ [A] Audit trail toggle [-] Main system menu [B] Build message from file [F] File system menu [D] Delete user [M] Message system menu [E] Edit user [U] Utilities system menu [L] Log file list [G] Goodbye - Logoff [N] Newin file processing [P] Purge files [R] Read messages [O] Macro operations [S] System directory [T] Toggle printer [V] Validate user [Alt-V] Validate current caller [X] Shell to DOS [F6] Screen capture [Y] Yank files from Newin [F8] Add time to user online :Y Thank you for calling.
