Course Name: The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island, South Carolina Notoriety : Site of the 1991 Ryder Cup Matches Source : Videotape of the telecasts by the USA network and NBC : Official Program for the 1992 Ryder Cup : Assorted photographs JNSE Design: Ted Maiden (aka "MAKER") --------------------------------------------------------------------- This is the second of my JNUG courses that I have converted to JNSE. I have acquired additional source materials and have been able to produce a more accurate representation of the dunes around various fairways and greens. I have also corrected several minor errors in the shape of the fairways and made several elevation changes to show the mounding in the fairways. You will also note that the back nine shows more of the adjacent holes. --------------------------------------------------------------------- ABOUT THE COURSE: I managed to get about 18 hours of videotape on the Ryder Cup Matches and thanks to USA Network and NBC and the Metlife Blimp for some great shots of what may go down as the greatest golf event of this century. It was truly golf at its very best. You will have to bring your thinking cap to this course. The greens are the fiendish creation of Pete Dye, the course architect, and are very undulating and hard to hold. Each of the greens was perched atop a mound and has steep slopes off the sides. I did not have access to a scorecard, nor a course layout. The blimp shots are great, but cannot replace a good layout diagram. So, there are bound to be some technical errors in the design that I present here. However, I feel that I have captured the ESSENCE of the Kiawah Island experience. If you want to feel what Payne Stewart, Ray Floyd, Fred Couples, Paul Azinger, and the rest felt, then try this course with fast greens and the wind above 20 mph. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- OTHER COURSES If you like this course, you might want to try my other SE design.
