Family View V 1.5 Page # 2 ‹ˆ This program is designed with one Person as the root and all other people as descendants or spouses. Its main function is to be able to trace Your Surname back as far as written records will permit. The Pedigree function is retained for use if people want to View Their roots in that format. The first thing you should do is to back up the two program disks. This disk MANUAL and the program disk FVIEW If you are using a one or two floppy drive system you will require two formatted floppy disks, one for the program FVIEW and one for the print disk. Copy the program disk to one floppy, this will be your working disk. If you are using a hard disk set up your subdirectory with these commands. C> MD FVIEW C> CD \FVIEW C> COPY A: *.* C: C> FVIEW NOTE: Press ENTER key after each command. C to F can be used on hard drive. Family View V 1.5 Page # 3 ‹ˆ SETUP To run the program for the first time you type in FVIEW at the dos prompt then the opening screen will be displayed, to select the menu press any key except Esc. You will see the instruction at the bottom of the box. The next display you will see is the menu. The choices are SETUP, EDITOR, DISPLAY, and PRINTER the highlight bar is positioned over SETUP, press the ENTER key for selection. !!!!!!! SETUP MUST BE RUN FIRST !!!!!!!!! After you select SETUP the setup program will be loaded and executed. First FILE has to be selected, this is done by typing F then you are given a DISK DRIVE choice A to F this will be the drive that your data FILES will be stored on. This function allows for use of 1 or 2 floppy drive system or a hard drive system. Select A to F you do not have to press after selection Next selection is FILE1 this name can be up to 20 characters long and should be a NAME that you are writing a family tree for This name should be upper-case only. e.g.. MAHONEY, McLAUGHLIN, SMITH etc. !!!!!!! WARNING !!!!!!! The next selection is ROOT1, do not enter a record number here until data has been entered in the EDITOR PROGRAM ! The ROOT person will be declared as generation 1 and all persons that are descendants of this person will be put into generation levels. This NO. creates a generation index in the data file and should be changed when you have entered a new ROOT person. If the ROOT person has changed then enter the RECORD NO. for that person. The generation INDEX is necessary for ANCESTOR, RELATIONSHIP and STATISTIC CHARTS. The next two selections are the same as last two only it lets you write to another family tree. Family View V 1.5 Page # 4 ‹ˆ SETUP After you have finished with FILE you are given Three choices they are MORE, COLOR or SAVE. MORE will let you re-enter print in the FILE column. COLOR will let you select colors for your program. SAVE will save this file and then ask you if you want to rewrite the GENERATION index, entering Y will give you one of two choices FILE 1 or FILE 2. This should be done if the ROOT person has changed or to periodically rewrite the index after entering people in the EDIT program. Entering N will exit to the main MENU. Family View V 1.5 Page # 5 COLOR SELECTION The default colors are Color No. Background Blue 1 Box Cyan 3 Title Red 4 Fieldname Yellow 14 Field Light Cyan 11 Line White 7 SubTitle Light Green 10 Command line Yellow 14 You can change these colors by selecting C For color on the command line at bottom of screen. Selection 1 is Back gr. color and the only choices are 0 to 7 the program will change the BACK GROUND to the color you selected, if you are not satisfied with this selection you can re-enter colors by typing M for MORE after you finished with COLOR SELECTION. Selection 2 is Box color, the choices for this color and the rest of color selection are in the range 1 to 15, you cannot use 0 even though it is displayed, there will also be one other color you cannot use but it will not be displayed. This color will be be the color. Selection 3 is Title color, this appears in the top line of the box. Once information has been entered in SET UP up you do not have to select it any more unless you want to make some changes !!!!CAUTION!!!! If you are using a floppy drive system you must put a write protect tab on your program disk after saving the setup program file, this file is called INST and is required for the program to work. The tab prevents the EDIT program from writing to this disk. Family View V 1.5 Page # 7 ‹ˆ < EDIT PROGRAM > The next step is to select < EDIT PROGRAM > from the main menu move the highlight bar down to EDITOR with up/dn keys and then press the ENTER key The first screen you will see is the FILE SELECTION, select 1 or 2, these files will be the names you entered in SETUP the next screen will ask you if you want to enter data in the PERSON FILE, MARRIAGE FILE, or Esc. !!!! CAUTION !!!! Enter print in PERSON FILE first Then MARRIAGE FILE !! After PERSON FILE is selected you will be asked for Add record, Record #, List or Esc. Typing A will bring up an empty record to enter data in. Typing R will prompt you for a record number. This number must be an existing record, it is used to add or change data to a record. Typing L will display people that are in the person file, this makes it easier to revise a record as you do not have to look up a hard copy list or remember every persons record number. This program has been setup so that you can enter persons in any chronological order that you want. The DISPLAY and PRINT programs will sort lists and records in order of birthdates. Family View V 1.5 Page # 8 ‹ˆ < PERSON RECORD > If a person record has been selected either new or existing you will have a choice of their personal data or biographical data. The person record contains 11 FIELDS to enter data in. The length of each FIELD is displayed in reverse video so that you do not have to count the characters you are entering, do not type past the end of the reverse bar. If you want to change a particular field just over type and then press ENTER. !!! DO NOT !!! Try to blank out extra letters with the space bar, e.g. if you want to change Garry Rayman to Garry just type Garry then press ENTER do not use the space bar to erase Rayman because the program counts the number of characters that you enter, and unwanted characters will be deleted. If you accidentally type data in a field and you have not pressed the ENTER key just move the cursor back to the first position on the line using the BACK SPACE key then press ENTER. Dates are very important in this program because they are used in sorting algorithms to display, and print lists in other programs in this package. The Date field must be in the following format dd Mmm yyyy 01 Jan 1900, 00 Cir 1950 or they can be skipped. If you want to skip a field just press the ENTER key, when the cursor is on the first position of the line. The cursor and highlight bar will move down the screen to the next field. To blank out a FIELD just press once then press the Enter key. After you have finished entering print you have three choices. SAVE, MORE or Esc Family View V 1.5 Page # 9 < PERSON RECORD > Typing S will save this record then ask if you would like to enter data in another record or exit. Typing M will move the cursor to the first field which is the Surname. Pressing the ENTER key while the cursor is under the first character will skip to next field. Continue pressing ENTER until you reach the line you want to enter or change data on. Pressing the Esc key will exit this record with out saving any print. The next command line will display NEW, RECORD NUMBER, LIST or Esc. Pressing Esc here will take you out to the opening screen of the EDIT program. The next entry is the marriage date, it is the same format as the birth and deathdates in the person record. The next 4 fields are text entries and they are City, Church, Country and Comments. The Person list is available from the marriage record so you can scroll through the list and get the record numbers for both spouses. when you have these numbers hit the space bar and you will return to the opening screen for marriage entry. This allows you to enter marriage records more efficiently as you do not have to remember their record numbers when you entered data in the marriage record. The Marriage list will display couples that are in the marriage file, this allows you easier access to existing records for adding more data as you obtain it. Family View V 1.5 Page # 12 ‹ˆ < MARRIAGE RECORDS > Entering marriage records is important because the display program cannot form family groups with out at least one parent which brings up another important fact. If one spouse is not known skip their entry, the program will accept a null entry as a valid input. This display shows the user the fieldnames that FAMILY VIEW uses and the length and format that data must be entered in each field in marriage records. FIELDNAME FIELD Male spouse #..... Each generation no. is printed in the same column there by enabling easy tracing of any person back to first generation. The descendant chart can be sent to to the Screen viewing only, the printer for a hard copy or it can be sent to a disk file. The disk file is is a text file named DESCEND.DAT you can edit this file with any text editor and then upload it to BBS's for imformation gathering NOTE! This version will let you Send a file in the print or descendant program to a disk file. All of these files will have .DAT for an extension. If the file is greater than 32K Bytes long The program will pause and ask you for another name to continue. This 32K limit will keep files to Managable length. These files are text files so they can be loaded into any text editor and modified to the users requirement. Family View V 1.5 Page # 20 ‹ˆ < GEDCOM UTILTIES > As with all Family View Programs you Must Specify A File name when Writing to or Reading from an Fview File. If you are importing a GedCom file you will be asked for the Originating (Gedcom file). This file will have .GED as an extension. All you are required to enter is the File name not the Extension Eg Ringer For RINGER.GED Or Ringer For RINGER.PER, RINGER.MAR The next request will ask for the destination File (Fview) if you want the same name as the import file press the enter key it will automatically be copied The import program will read a Gedcom File that uses the PAF 2.1 format. It has been tested on files created by BK5 and FSB V1.06 It will import the following Surname Given Names Sex Date of Birth Place Date of Death Place Marriage : If Marriage is Confirmed Husb & Wife : If they are married Children : If there is a confirmed Marriage It splits the Gedcom place field into two Fields City and Country This Works fine if the place is formatted this way 2 PLAC Ottawa Ont. Canada This will be translated to City : Ottawa Country : Ont. Canada But if the place is formatted this way 2 PLAC Fort Lauderdale FL USA This will be translated to City : Fort Country : Lauderdale FL USA This will be the same for Death Place Family View V 1.5 Page # 21 < GEDCOM UTILTIES > If you are exporting to a GedCom file you will be asked for the Originating (Family View). This file will have .PER as an extension. All you are required to enter is the File name not the Extension Eg Ringer For RINGER.PER Or Ringer For RINGER.PER, RINGER.MAR The next request will ask for the destination File (GedCom) file. If you want the export file to have the same name as the originating file then press the enter key, it will automatically be copied The export program will write a Gedcom File that uses the PAF 2.1 format. It has been tested on files created by BK5 and FSB V1.06. If you are using the export File to write a file so other Genealogy programs can import you can Skip the Submitters name and address. If you are submitting data to the LDS Data Bank Then you are required to enter this data. The export function will write to a Gedcom File the following Surname Given Names Sex Date of Birth City + Country It combines City and Country to 1 Place Field Date of Death City + Country It combines City and Country to 1 Place Field Marriage File Husband and Wife Date of Marriage City and Country Parent Child index Family View V 1.5 Page # 22 < TINY TAFEL UTILTIES > The first input request will be the Family View file name that this program needs to generate a tiny tafel. The second request is a name for the destination (Tiny Tafel) File. If you hit the enter key instead of typing a name the program will use the same name as the first entry for the output file. You do not have to add the extension to any file names in the Family View series of programs as this little convenience is added to this software. The next request will ask you if you want to send the tiny tafel to the printer. This is just a Y/N response. The next request is mandatory for submitting a tiny tafel. They are your Name, Address and phone number. When all this data has been entered the program will load the input file. It then stores a single occurance of a surname so it will take a while to load. Once the surnames have been loaded it will sort them alphabetically and then display them in two columns. You can then select a name by moving the selection pointer with the up/dn arrow key then hitting the letter T You will be then asked for an interest level for this name There are 4 interest levels, 0,1,2,3 and you have to enter a number here. This will be the interest level for the person with the earliest birthdate. The second interest request is for the person with the last birthdate. Once the names have been tagged you press the enter key and the program will start writing a tiny tafel file for you. this will have the extension .TT If you want more information on the tiny tafel format you should try and obtain a file called TTSPEC.DOC from your BBS This will probably be compressed and will have a different ext. Family View V 1.5 Page # 23 < ERROR CODES > Error trapping routines are listed in this section along with a brief explanation. < SETUP must be run first. > This error occurs if you try to run the EDIT, DISPLAY, or PRINT program without running the SETUP program first and creating the INST file. < Family names are not in program you must enter them in setup. > The INST file has been created but you need to enter a Family name in setup program, this only occurs if both FILE 1 and FILE 2 are empty. < is empty you must enter data in the editor program. > This occurs when you try to run DISPLAY or PRINT program before entering data in the EDIT program. < Error in reply. > This is probably the error that occurs the most and is caused by fingers that can not follow the instructions that your brain sends to them. Examples are pressing the wrong key or entering a record number that does not exist. < Disk drive error detected please correct > This is occurs when the program is looking for your print files in floppy drive A: or B: and the drive is either empty or the door is not closed < Printer error detected please correct > There are three problems that occur with this error, printer is turned off, out of paper, and could not find printer. The first two will signal right away the last one will take 10 to 20 seconds so don't be alarmed, this will happen if your printer is is not connected to your computer Family View V 1.5 Page # 24 ‹ˆ < ERROR CODES > < Printer off line detected please correct > This one is self explanatory and will take a few seconds to display If these errors are not corrected and you attempt to continue, the program will exit to dos. There is one error that will throw you out to dos, No questions asked! The error code is 7 This happens if there is not enough memory to load FVIEW. This is caused by Ram resident programs or text files that are left over from other programs, so rebooting the computer will solve this problem.
