{R E L E A S E D {ARTISOFT ANNOUNCES NEW ARTICOM(TM) MODEM-SHARING SOFTWARE {Allows Asynchronous COM Port Sharing on any NetBIOS LAN (TUCSON, Ariz. -- October 16, 1991) -- Artisoft announced today its new ArtiCom modem-sharing software that allows asynchronous COM port sharing on any LAN operating under NetBIOS. Scheduled to ship in mid-November 1991, it is priced at $399 per network. "With ArtiCom, network users will now be able to share modems, faxes and other communication devices from any computer on the LAN," said Jack Schoof, Artisoft President and CEO. Artisoft's ArtiCom modem-sharing software allows network users to share COM port devices like modems, faxes, serial printers and plotters, including plotters that require bi-directional communication. It includes a built-in terminal emulation program, providing users with access to host mainframes, BBS, and other systems available by modem without purchasing additional communication software. The ArtiCom modem-sharing software can be installed to create modem workstations, modem servers, or combination modem workstation/servers. Users can share up to four modems per ArtiCom server. The ArtiCom software operates as a TSR program, requires less than 6K of RAM, and is unloadable from memory. Designed to support communications products with LAN API Interrupt 14 (INT14) support, the ArtiCom software is compatible with products such as Communications Research Group's BLAST PC, Caber Software's COM-AND, DCA's Crosstalk Mk. 4, Future Software Engineering's DynaComm Asynchronous Edition, SoftKlone's Mirror III, Datastorm Technology's Procomm Plus LAN Version, Hayes Microcomputer Product's Smartcom Exec and Synappsys' WinComm. The ArtiCom modem-sharing software was also designed to take advantage of the First In First Out (FIFO) buffer mode of the NS16550A Universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter (UART) chip, which allows the flow of information from the internal mode to the PC to move faster. Artisoft develops and manufactures a full line of hardware and software for local area networks including the LANtastic(R) Local Area Network, which has won numerous industry awards for its affordability, performance, features and ease of use. The LANtastic network is a peer-to-peer network that allows users of IBM-compatible computers to connect and share information and peripheral devices such as printers, hard drives and CD-ROMs. For more information about Artisoft or its product line, contact Artisoft, Inc. at 691 E.River Road, Tucson, AZ 85704.
