Q:  How can I use a function key to type out today's date into a field
    or the notepad?

A:  You will have to use one of the function keys in the shift range.
    The expression: &dtoc(date()) will print out in mm/dd/yy format
    and in 11.2   : &dtc(date())  will print out in mm-dd-yy format
