HOW TO LOG ONTO THE NEW UCF LIBRARY COMPUTER -- LUIS (Library User Information Service) 1. Call the new UCF data line for the IBM 7171 computer at 1200 baud, 8 bits, 1 stop bit, and no parity. The number is 275-2949. 2. After connection, press . A list of supported terminal types will be listed. The IBM 7171 does not communicate directly with the PC. The calling computer must be in terminal emulation mode. (Some examples, Digital VT100, Televideo 912, 920, & 950, IBM 3101 & 3160, etc.) 3. Place your computer into terminal emulation mode and type its ID (as it is shown in the supported terminal list) when prompted. You will get the UCF Logo and a prompt to press OR to continue. Do so. 4. The next screen will prompt you for a command. Type "DIAL VTAM" (without the quotes) and press . This will begin the process of the IBM 7171 protocol converter dialing the IBM 4381 computer to access the SUS (State University System) menu. This system ties all the state university libraries into one network. You may search for titles, authors, or subjects in any branch of the State University System libraries. For now, let's concentrate on UCF. 5. At the SUS menu, type NERLUIS at the prompt at the bottom of the screen and press . You should see a prompt similar to LOGGING ON TO LUIS IN PROGRESS. You will now see a new screen. 6. At the ENTER SLECTION HERE prompt, type "1 " (without the quotes). The next screen is the security module screen. Here is the sequence: Type- FCL and the cursor will automatically move to the next line. Type- BAYA and the cursor will automatically move to the next line. Type- BAYA again and press . You should now have a new prompt which says "SIGN-ON COMPLETE." 7. Type LUCF and press . You should see a screen entitled "LUIS: LIBRARY USER INFORMATION SERVICE." You will now be online with the UCF branch of the library system. Other branches are accessed by the following codes: Florida A&M University LUAM Florida Atlantic University LUFA Florida International University LUFI Florida State University LUFS University of Central Florida LUCF University of Florida LUUF University of North Florida LUNF University of South Florida LUSF University of West Florida LUWF 8. The system is menu driven and easy to use. After you are done, you must back out of the system in the reverse order of entering. I have tried this procedure with an IBMPCXT using VT100 emulation mode, and everything has worked just fine. Here goes... 9. To logoff, you must clear the screen. In VT100 mode, the sequence must be started from the LUIS introduction screen you saw after you typed LUCF. The sequence is , O (letter O, not zero), M. Press these keys indi- vidually, not in combination. This should clear the screen for two seconds. Type LOGOFF while the screen is clear and press . This should bring you back to the SUS menu. Next, type UNDIAL at the SUS menu prompt line. You should see a message similar to "DROP FROM VTAM xxx". (xxx is a temporary terminal ID assigned to you during sign-on and can be ignored.) Press the key at the prompt and you will get the UCF logo again. 10. The next step is to tell the IBM 7171 you are disconnecting. In VT100 mode, the sequence is , ` (the accent character, not the apostrophe), and , (comma). These keys should be pressed individually, not in com- bination. You should get the first prompt you saw when you signed on- ENTER TERMINAL TYPE. At this point, you may simply tell your modem to hang up (or otherwise disconnect the line). I hope this will help library users gain access through their personal com- puters. It is much more complicated than the previous system, but it is not really difficult. According to the UCF staff, the old system should be discontinued on or about the first of 1988. It may stay on a little longer if they haven't cleared all the bugs out of the new system. The Computer Center at UCF has a couple of handouts that explain in greater detail how to use the system, along with key and command conversion charts to aid the user while in terminal emulation mode. These are: NERLUIS- Using the LUIS System from UCF Mainframe Terminals (which is necessary for the sign-on information, even if you are dialing from a remote computer) IBM 7171- Using the IBM 7171 Protocol Converter. (This one has the conversion charts, an explanation of the system, and the names and numbers of computer support people. Ed Elkes. Amended 2/2/92
