WILLSONVILLE, Ore., May 4,1992 - Tektronix today announced an upgrade option to give its previous generation of thermal wax color printers the same performance and functionality as the current Tektronix Phaser(TM) II PXi color printer. The upgrade consists of a new controller board with a 24MHz AMD 29000 RISC processor and Adobe System Inc.'s PostScript(TM) level 2 software. PostScript Level 2 conso- lidates extensions to the PostScript page description language and adds new features such as device-independent color support and data compression capability. The new controller will be available at an introductory price of $1,995 from July 1 through Dec. 31, 1992. The sug- gested list price for the upgrade will be $2,495 after Jan. 1, 1993. This field-installed upgrade is available from authorized Tektronix resellers and directly from Tektronix. It is compatible with Tektronix 4693D/DX, 4693RGB, RGB II, Phaser CP, Phaser CPS, Phaser PE and Phaser PX thermal wax color printer models, which were sold between August 1987 and December 1991. "Tektronix was the first to market with thermal wax color printers implementing Adobe's PostScript Level 2 software, but we also have many thousands of customers still using our durable, high-capacity print engines of our earlier models," said A.J. Rogers, Tektronix strategic marketing manager. "This upgrade supports Tektronix' existing users by offering full Adobe PostScript Level 2 software capabilities and fas- ter RISC processing without the need to buy a new printer." The upgrade also includes TekColor(TM) PS version 2.0, a software utility that combines TekColor technology and device-independant color rendering of PostScript Level 2 to improve the color accuracy of output from applications. Incorporated into the printer's Microsoft Windows(TM) and apple(R) Macintosh(R) drivers, TekColor PS lets users select color choices from the print dialog box and preview printed colors on the screen. In addition to PostScript Level 2, the upgrade supports Hewlett-Packard Graphics Language (HP-GL) for compatibility with a wide range of computer applications. PostScript language and HP-GL files can be accepted simultaneously from different applications. The PXi upgrade also comes with PANTONE(R)* certification to provide process color simulation of PANTONE colors for users of PANTONE-licensed applications. The PXi upgrade supports intelligent, automatic switching among its standard serial, parallel and AppleTalk(R) ports, and is compatible with the recently announced 4511A Network Interface which provides TCP/IP lpr support over thin, thick and twisted pair ethernet at rates up to 90Kb/sec. A SCSI port allows the user to connect an external hard disk for font storage and cashing.
