SAFEPACK: The SAFE Shareware Disk Defragmenter Most PC users fail to get the best performance from their hard disks, as many of the files are scattered around the disk as several fragments. The DOS and Windows manuals advise users to defragment their disks, yet provide no utility to accomplish this, so SAFEPACK has been designed to fill this gap in the shareware market. Apart from its price, SAFEPACK has an important advantage over some of the commercial utilities in that the file structures remain valid at all stages of the procedure, thereby protecting the data in the event of any interruption. SAFEPACK offers the following unique combination of features: 1) Immunity from Interruption Some well known commercial defragmentation programs can cause chaos and extensive loss of data if interrupted, but SAFEPACK is designed so that the security of the data on the disk should not be affected by any kind of interruption to its operation, whether this be user break-in, machine malfunction, or even a power failure. 2) Works with all currently released DOS versions and disk types. SAFEPACK works under any version of DS-DOS from 2.0 to 5.0, and any DR-DOS up to 6.0. It can cope with any type of disk drive (except those compressed with Stacker/SuperStor etc), and can handle up to about 5000 files per disk. 3) Numerous Sorting Options Files may be sorted by name, extension, age or length, and files within a directory may be kept together for faster access. Further optimizations include placing subdirectories in the DOS PATH at the start of a disk, and putting EXE & COM files at the start of a directory. For regular use, SAFEPACK may be instructed only to move those files that are currently fragmented. 4) Defragmentation of Free Disk Space This enables the largest possible Windows permanent swap file to be created, as advised in the Windows manual. 5) Suitability for Unattended Use SAFEPACK may, if required, be run entirely from the command-line. In this mode it requires no user input, and is suitable for inclusion in batch files. 6) Registration is only nine pounds (Sterling), inclusive of postage Payment is accepted by credit or charge card, making payment easy, irrespective of the purchaser's native currency.
