June 8, 1992 -- Dayton, Ohio -- In support of its commitment to the real-time market, Systran Corp. announced today the Model R1600 rehostable network interface. With the introduction of the Model R1600, any bus architecture -- even those of obsolete, proprietary or not-yet-invented computers -- can be integrated into the SCRAMNet real-time replicated shared-memory network. The Model R1600 was developed in response to customer requests for SCRAMNet support of low-volume, aging or proprietary computer systems used in such real-time applications as simulation, telemetry and process control. Said W. Lynn Trainor, president of Systran, "The introduction of the R1600 puts into the customer's hands the ability to integrate a real-time system using virtually any mix of computer systems, even those not yet invented. We believe no other real-time network provider can make this claim." With the Model R1600 interface, system architects can quickly and cost-effectively integrate bus architectures that are not directly supported by Systran into the SCRAMNet network. For example, to connect an Intel IWARP computer to a MicroVAX and a VME-based real-time computer system, a customer could use SCRAMNet's existing Q-bus and VME-bus-based interfaces, and the Model R1600 to connect the non-standard IWARP memory bus. The compact, rack-mountable Model R1600 houses the SCRAMNet network interface and a general-purpose interface port. A separate adapter board in the host system contains all of the circuitry necessary to meet host-specific bus requirements. The customer designs the host adapter, with Systran supplying interface specifications for the register and memory port on the Model R1600, and other technical support. The Model R1600 maintains full SCRAMNet functionality and compatibility, offering the same low data latency, 150 Mbit/sec. speed, deterministic performance and ease-of-installation as other SCRAMNet interface products. SCRAMNet Designed for Simplicity, Speed SCRAMNet, the leading real-time distributed network, is optimized for simplicity and speed. With SCRAMNet's replicated shared-memory design, all computer nodes on the network are equipped with identical computer-addressable memories. Every change to the replicated shared-memory at one node is immediately and automatically repeated in all nodes on the network in microseconds, causing all computers to appear to real-time applications as one large virtual multi-processor. Featuring fiber-optic technology, a sophisticated interrupt structure, data filtering and a programmable byte swapper, the SCRAMNet network avoids the limitations of physical shared-memory architectures and message-passing LANs to deliver true real-time speed, deterministic performance, and positive system control with no software overhead. Pricing and Availability The SCRAMNet Model R1600 rehostable network interface is available now for $6,700 to $9,600, depending on memory size. In addition, options are available for internal dual link and fiber-optic bypass switch options. An established research and development firm headquartered in Dayton, Ohio, Systran Corp. specializes in simulation, artificial intelligence and defense-related hardware/software research and development. The company's SCRAMNet network is the leading real-time network, with hundreds of nodes in use at aerospace, corporate and U.S. military installations.
