Weitek Power for Windows

Weitek has entered the Windows acceleration market with two chips that
dramatically increase the speed of Windows applications. The W5086 and the
new W5186 increase the speed of business applications (like word
processors and spreadsheets) from 2-4 times. With more than 10 million

AvTech Announces Weitek-Powered Graphics Board

AvTech recently introduced their new GraphTEK video card which is based on
the Weitek W5086. This new card is the first in a series of AvTech video
graphics products. "The choice was very clear for us to work with Weitek
when we completed our price/performance analysis with all available
graphic controllers!" said Moses Sun, President of AvTech. "Weitek's
graphic controller is a perfect match to our marketing plan. It offers the
most cost effective solution to speed up the display performance of

The new board from AvTech is 100% compatible to the VESA standard to run
all VGA software. It uses VRAM (rather than DRAM,) to achieve maximum
performance. The board supports all standard display resolutions up to
1024 X 768 and up to 76Hz refresh rate. The performance of the board in a
standard 386SX is up to four times that of a standard VGA in the same
system. It's like adding a 80486DX CPU to the 386SX system without the
expense of the new CPU.

Weitek Demo Boards Acclaimed

Weitek has built some boards based on the W5086 to demonstrate this new
technology to Windows applications developers. We are also making the
boards available for review in industry publications and in large

Richard Eckhouse, University of Massachusetts at Boston in his recent
review in IEEE Computer says . . . "I've always known Weitek as the
manufacturer of accelerator chips for the IBM PC and compatibles. So when
I heard Weitek was making a user-interface controller chip to speed up the
Windows GDI functions, I wasn't surprised. Installation of the Windows
software is automatic and the most intelligent I've seen (and I've tested
a great many boards). My typical applications are Ami Pro and Excel; my
first impression was that the display scrolling in both application was
considerably faster than it had been. When asked by a good friend if I
would give it to him after finishing my review, I replied, 'No way; it
stays in my machine!"

The February, 1992 issue of Computing Success focuses on the Weitek Power
for Windows and included the following . . ." My what a pleasant--and
startling-- surprise! The Weitek Power for Windows card makes Windows
actually fly. Yes, you heard that right-- fly! The screen display becomes
so fast, that a 90K Micrografx Designer file loads and displays in about 3
seconds. The same file on the T386/33MHz Demon, now with the CompuAdd
card, takes nearly 12 seconds to fill the screen. I run Windows with
Norton Desktop as the shell, and have become accustomed to a loading time
of about 45 seconds. Weitek has taken the two slowest routines of the
Widows GDI and built them into a high speed SuperVGA controller chip. It's
the W5086. This is not a separate card, as are some graphics controllers,
but a half-slot 16-bit card that takes over all the video functions of the
computer. At the DOS level, the card does nothing fancy. But within
Windows, the card off-loads the graphics function from the software driver
and handles them at high speed with the W5086 chip."

Weitek Launches The W5186

We launched the W5186 at COMDEX. In the next issue we will list the
companies building boards with this enhanced product. We will also feature
information on our W8720 chip. We launched this part in 1991 in the
high-end workstation market and we are about to release the chip into the
PC market, along with Windows 3.1 and AutoCAD drivers. We'll also have a
full toolkit available for our OEMs to write their own suite of drivers.
W8720 based boards will be able to display 1280 x 1024 in 256 colors
faster than any other boards on the market, all at 76Hz refresh rates.
