BEAVERTON, Ore. -- June 29, 1992 -- Central Point Software, Inc. is now shipping Central Point Anti-Virus 1.3, which now detects and eliminates more than 1,200 viruses. New features include comprehensive protection from viruses generated by the Mutation Engine (also known as the Dark Avenger Mutation Engine), enhanced removal options for infected files, and protection from virus infection during a warm boot. Among the more than 200 additional viruses that the program now finds and eliminates are Terminator, CMOS, and viruses created with the Mutation Engine, including Pogue, Fear, Groove, PLO and Sara. Protection Against viruses Generated by the Mutation Engine There has been a recent heightened awareness surrounding the increase in viruses generated by the Mutation Engine. The Mutation Engine is a tool that enables virus programmers to quickly and easily create polymorphic viruses, or self-modifying viruses, from an existing virus. "With the advent of the Mutation Engine, the virus problem is becoming increasingly worse," noted Bob Bales, executive director of the National Computer Security Association. "Because the Mutation Engine creates polymorphic viruses that change with every infection, detection of these viruses becomes especially difficult." Central Point AntiVirus 1.3 provides a necessary solution to both detecting and cleaning these viruses. Central Point Anti-Virus 1.3 detects Mutation Engine-generated viruses that have been created from both known and unknown viruses. If the source virus is a known virus, Central Point Anti-Virus will be able to identify the virus by name and clean it immediately. If the polymorphic virus was created from an unknown virus, the program will still detect it by identifying it as a Mutation Engine-generated virus. Removal Options Increase Security In addition to cleaning infected files, Central Point Anti-Virus 1.3 now includes the option to delete files when a virus is found, increasing security and protecting against further infection. When this option is selected, the program deletes the infected file. Memory Resident Programs Enhance Protection from Virus Infection The VSAFE and VWATCH memory-resident programs, which monitor the system for virus infections, now increase protection by checking a diskette in Drive A for viruses before performing a warm boot (Ctrl Alt Del). If the diskette in Drive A is found to be infected with a virus, VSAFE or VWATCH will prevent the warm boot from taking place.
