REDMOND, Wash. -- June 29, 1992 -- Microsoft Corporation announced today plans for significant upgrade offers, as well as product support and services for customers of Fox products. Completion of the merger with Fox Software was announced today as well. "The Fox installed base of users is one of the most important assets of Fox Software and we are committed to servicing these users to the best of our ability," said Tod Nielsen, Microsoft's group product manager for the Fox product line. "We plan to protect our existing customers' investments through low-cost upgrade offers, make the products widely and easily available to other users with attractive, competitive upgrade pricing, and provide quality service and support." Significant Upgrade Offers Available to Fox Users Any current owner of FoxBASE+ database for the MS-DOS operating system or FoxPro database 1.x can now upgrade to FoxPro 2.0 for MS-DOS directly from Microsoft for only $175. For all customers obtaining any version of FoxPro 2.0 for MS-DOS between June 1 and December 31, 1992, Microsoft is offering a free upgrade to FoxPro 2.5 for either the MS-DOS or Windows operating systems. The free upgrade will be available directly from Microsoft when the products ship. FoxPro 2.5 for Windows is being released this week to a limited number of beta sites. In addition, customers who acquired any version of FoxPro 2.0 prior to June 1, 1992, will be eligible to upgrade to FoxPro 2.5 for either MS-DOS or Windows operating systems for only $99. Competitive Upgrades Offered Microsoft also announced today competitive upgrade offers for FoxPro 2.0 for MSDOS and FoxBASE+ for the Macintosh. Users of dBASE, Paradox, Clipper, DataEase, R:BASE, Superbase, Arago and dBFast are eligible to upgrade to Microsoft FoxPro 2.0 for MS-DOS for the price of $199. Also included in the above competitive offer is a free upgrade to FoxPro 2.5 for either the MS-DOS or Windows operating systems when the products ship. In addition, users of 4D, Double Helix, Omnis Seven, dBASE for the Macintosh, FileMaker Pro, and Microsoft File are eligible to upgrade to Microsoft FoxBASE+ for the Macintosh for the price of $149. Both competitive upgrade offers above are available through resellers or directly from Microsoft. All of the mentioned upgrade offers will expire on December 31, 1992.' Product Support and Services Microsoft plans to continue existing product support policies offered by Fox Software. Effective immediately, product support for domestic and Canadian customers is available through a toll phone number (419) 872-0043 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. EST, Monday through Friday, excluding holidays. Electronic support is also available on a CompuServe forum (FOXFORUM). Microsoft Product Support services will respond to support requests on FOXFORUM within 24 hours of receipt, at no extra charge, between 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST, Monday through Friday, excluding holidays. In addition, Microsoft has implemented a dedicated phone line, (800) 432-1FOX, which will provide referrals to sources of information regarding Fox products and services. To obtain feedback for enhancements to support and service programs, Microsoft has been meeting with users at user groups to define additional support services for Microsoft's database products. New programs will be phased in beginning in September. To successfully launch these new programs, Microsoft plans to dedicate more than one hundred database support personnel by October. Suggested Retail Pricing and Packaging Microsoft has no immediate plans to change the suggested retail prices of existing Fox products. The suggested retail price of FoxPro 2.0 for MS-DOS is $795 for the single-user version and $895 for the multiuser six-pack version. FoxBASE+ for Macintosh has a suggested retail price of $495 for the single user version and $595 for the multiuser six-pack version. Microsoft plans to retain the use of Fox and FoxPro names and logos. The company is repackaging key Fox products under the "Microsoft FoxPro" and "Microsoft FoxBASE+ for the Macintosh" names, as well as identifying all other products as Microsoft by placing special stickers on the packages.
