ATLANTA (July 15, 1992) -- Intecolor Corporation, a leading manufacturer of industrial displays and workstations, announced today it has increased productivity levels and manufacturing yields by more than 15 percent, while reducing its in-process product discrepancies and defects by 10 percent. The company accomplished these improvements through quality assurance programs based on process improvement as part of its program to achieve ISO (International Standards Organization) 9000 registration. Implemented in October 1991, the new quality assurance programs are called Total Quality Management (TQM). The effort employs process and quality improvement techniques based on Statistical Process Control (SPC). SPC analyzes and tracks process capabilities by examining the external factors that impact final product quality. These factors could include using the wrong materials, material shortages and using incorrect tools. Intecolor's management and manufacturing staff were the first employees to be trained in TQM. The company is currently in Phase III of the training, which focuses on its engineering and administrative departments. As a result of the SPC training, Intecolor now uses a four-step process that stimulates employee initiative and involvement. The process includes the following activities: . establishing "Quality Productivity Improvement" teams that provide first-hand input for improvement. . preparing control charts that measure each process and its outcome. . identifying and segregating problems using the Quality Productivity Improvement teams. . analyzing and resolving individual quality problems. According to David Deans, president of Intecolor, the company has implemented the process improvement programs as part of its ongoing effort to achieve ISO 9000 registration. "Not only will ISO 9000 enhance our existing quality system, it also will allow Intecolor to remain competitive in the world market while reducing operating costs," said Deans. "And in today's international marketplace, ISO ratings are clearly a competitive edge." The company expects to receive ISO 9002 registration in April 1993 and ISO 9001 registration later that year. ISO 9000 is widely embraced in Europe where it grew out of a European Economics Community '92 effort to provide a common set of quality standards. ISO 9000 registration is expected to become a "de facto" prerequisite for doing business in Europe. Other parts of the world, including the U.S., also are rapidly accepting ISO 9000 as a quality standard. Founded in 1973, Intecolor is a leading manufacturer of human-machine interface systems for the industrial control industry. Its complete line of industrial workstations, monitors and terminals is available in a wide range of enclosures and resolutions.
