NEW YORK, NY - June 24, 1992 - Micro Data Base Systems, Inc. (mdbs) announced today that MDBS IV, the high performance database engine, will be available as a Novell NetWare Loadable Module (NLM). Solomon Software, developer of the Solomon Accounting Series, joined the announcement to discuss the performance enhancements and downsizing opportunities that will be available with their upcoming NLM version. MDBS IV is a high performance on-line transaction processing DBMS which utilizes entity-relationship modeling and client/server architecture. Mission critical applications with ultra-large databases are ideal candidates for MDBS IV development due to the unmatched modeling capabilities of MDBS IV. "This is a blue chip development," said Kevin Castleberry, President of Development Tools at Micro Data Base Systems, Inc. (mdbs). "The fastest client/server database on the market is now moving to the most powerful enterprise-wide computing environment. This combination shatters technological barriers to downsizing, making it possible to downsize applications that could not have been considered until now." Novell NLM This sentiment is echoed by Robert Shoop, Director of Database Products for Novell. "We are pleased to have Micro Data Base Systems, Inc. join the growing number of software developers who are implementing their database servers as NetWare Loadable Modules (NLMs)," stated Shoop. "Our customers will benefit from having the high performance solution of the MDBS IV database engine and the NetWare platform." Kevin Castleberry sketched mdbs' direction in terms of its commitment to client/server computing. "mdbs developed the first client/server database," asserted Castleberry," and we continue to be a leader in this growing arena. The MDBS IV NLM symbolizes our commitment to supply client/server technology for all major downsizing computing platforms." Solomon Software Technical Details Solomon Software, whose Accounting Series software is considered an industry standard, will be one of the first companies to benefit from the MDBS IV NLM version. "We're pleased to announce Solomon Software's intention to incorporate the mdbs NLM database engine into our high-end network accounting system, Solomon III," said Gary Harpst, President and Chief Executive Officer of Solomon Software. "The NLM should bring significant improvements in performance to our installed base of networked accounting sites, and should bring significant opportunities for businesses who are downsizing to NetWare 386 LANs for their accounting needs. Incorporating this NLM is a significant event in the evolution of Solomon III's client/server architecture, which we pioneered in the micro-accounting software market over six years ago." Technical Details The MDBS IV database server will operate on the Novell file server thus eliminating the need for a separate database server machine. Database I/O is done through standard I/O calls, thus taking advantage of Novell's superior disk operating system and caching. The MDBS IV NLM version features a speed improvement of up to 300% over the MDBS IV DOS version. The database server is fully 32-bit compiled, multi-threaded, and will run in as little as 512K RAM. Sales Information The MDBS IV NLM version is expected to be available in the fourth quarter Information of 1992. It is currently in beta testing at several MDBS IV customer sites. The MDBS IV NLM version will be priced at $7,000 and up. MDBS IV and M/4 for Windows are available direct from mdbs.
