Microplex Systems Ltd., Vancouver, BC, announces the release of Version 2.0 firmware for their M200/M201 Ethernet Printer Adapters featuring full TCP/IP, Telnetd, LPD, routing tables, and subnet masking to simplify network printing in Unix environments. Version 2.0 permits any computer system including DOS PCs, proprietary minis and mainframes using TCP/IP and the LPD printing protocol to configure and send print files directly to the M200/M201 without the need for special host software. Print files do not have to be spooled to a designated Unix host or workstation which reduces CPU overhead, network traffic, and printing time. Telnetd has been added to permit any system to telnet the M200/M201 and configure parameters, or obtain status of ports and attached printers. A routing table is now available in the M200/M201 to provide WAN access to printers, and the addition of subnet masking makes these units suitable for use in multiple subnets. LPD access lists and password protection at the root and user levels have been included to prevent unauthorized access or use of the print servers. The parallel port data rate has been increased from 50,000 to 75,000+ characters per second, and the M200/M201's dual 38,400 bps serial ports are now bi-directional for improved PostScript printer status monitoring. The M200 has Thick and Thin-wire and the M201 has Thick and 10Base-T UTP Ethernet Connections. Other features offered by 2.0 are log reports of jobs printed through LPD, LPD queue manipulation, LPD queue information (such as user ID and percentage of print job already processed), PostScript page count for accounting, and LPD configuration. Each unit comes packaged with easy to use npwrite host software which provides compatibility with Unix System V versions that do not support LPD. Direct printing without spooling in System V environments is also possible through a command line interface. npd software also supplied with each unit supports the pseudo tty daemon to enable bi-directional communications between the user and the serial ports on the M200/M201. This permits PostScript printers running Adobe's Transcript or SMCC's NeWSprint, to report printer status information back to the user. Version 2.0 is backward compatible with earlier versions of the M200/M201. Existing units can be upgraded for a cost of $150.00 US. M200/M201s with 2.0 are currently shipping.
