WHITE PLAINS, NY, July 15, 1992--It's been a pleasant cruise for most, but some of the passengers seem to have their own agenda. Why does Oscar have a look of doom on his face? What is Jerry doing snooping all over the ship? These are some of the questions that will be asked and answered by members as they play the PRODIGY Mystery Party. The PRODIGY Mystery Party, an online multiplayer mystery game, is a new Custom Choice for the PRODIGY service. Based on PRODIGY's popular mystery series, Abel Adventures, about the exploits of travel agent/amateur detective Tom Abel, it allows players to take on the role of a character in a multiplayer mystery game. The story, illustrated with distinctive graphics, progresses in real time and evolves in response to how members vote and by their comments posted on the bulletin boards. To play PRODIGY Mystery Party, members join teams representing each of the eight characters. Once members choose the characters they want to play, the team learns its character's secret goal. For example, if the character is an escaped convict on the run from police, it will be the team's goal to see that the convict successfully gets away. "We believe that the PRODIGY Mystery Party will appeal to people who may never have thought of using their computer recreationally," said Robert Gehorsam, manager of entertainment services for Prodigy. "One usually thinks of a game where people either win or lose. PRODIGY Mystery Party is more than a game, it's an event. This allows members to role play and take an active part in the ongoing story, as well as share the experience with other people." PRODIGY Mystery Party will be offered several times a year with a different story. The first story takes place on a cruise ship in the Orient. Sometime during the course of the cruise, a murder is committed, and each player discovers that he has at least two out of three classic elements to arouse a suspicion of guilt: means, motive and an opportunity. One goal, of course, is to discover exactly whodunnit, another is to achieve each character's own hidden agenda. Each day, players have access to the "public" story--the facts that everyone knows-- and to their own character's private story. Each character's actions are based on decisions that the team makes as a group, such as "Who should we sit with at dinner tonight?" and "Should we investigate that unlocked storeroom while everyone else is on deck?" Each day the enrolled member will have access to: . An update of the character's private story. . Current status and condition of the other characters. . The ship's newspaper, which details the publicly known activities of the characters. . Public bulletin boards where members talk to players on other teams. . Private team bulletin boards to discuss the clues, plan strategies and learn details. The private board also lets members talk to the game's writer about suggestions for future plot developments or character actions. . Choice of one visit to a location for dues. . Twice each week, the team will vote on what action the character should take next. Voting options will appear Wednesdays and weekends with the results revealed Fridays and Tuesdays. Saturdays and Sundays are considered one day (the same story information is available both days) for the purpose of the game and voting. The bulletin boards are always open for discussion. The results of the PRODIGY Mystery Party are presented at The Costume Ball during the final two days of play. Each character wears a costume, voted on by team players. All of the clues and secrets will come out in this conclusion. The PRODIGY Mystery Party is written on an ongoing basis by Hy Conrad, author of the Eureka project and the popular Abel Adventures. The Custom Choice is priced at $14.95 per member, in addition to the monthly PRODIGY service membership fee. The game is available seven days a week and each game lasts one month.
