(July 8, 1992) -- Racal-Datacom ALM Series is announced, a new generation of top performing, small sized, fully featured and network managed modems conforming to international standards. The series will include units compatible with the new V.FAST standard being developed by CCITT. The slim line ALM 3223 modem is a full-featured point-to-point two-wire dial or four-wire leased-line modem conforming to CCITT standards V.21, V.21bis, V.23, V.32, V.32bis, V.33 and Bell 212A/208/ 103, with transmission speeds of up to 14.4 thousand bits per second (Kbps). The modem will support all modulation schemes. as well as V.42 error correction and V.42bis, MNP-5 Class data compression rates of up to 57.6 Kbps DTE speeds for asynchronous applications. This eliminates performance bottlenecks that frequently occur when running complex applications with slower modems. Other characteristics of the ALM 3223 include two-wire dial back-up (V.32bis), more powerful processor, LCD display, and up to 50 telephone numbers storage. The ALM 3223 offers both automatic and manual modes of password security to prevent unauthorized user access, Communications Management Series (CMS) network management and a full set of CCITT V.54 diagnostics. The Communications Management Series (CMS) is an integrated group of software applications that provide network management for Racal-Datacom products." Dimensions are 1 1/4-inch high, 5 3/4-inch wide and 10 inches long. Unit list price is $1,145 with shipments beginning in July. V.FAST ALM 3239 AND ALM 3268 The ALM 3239 standalone and ALM 3268 dual density central site card operates in transmission speeds up to 19.2 Kbps in point-to-point two/four wire leased line or dial applications. Designed for high-density central site applications, the ALM 3268 combines two modems on a single card, allowing the user to install up to 32 modems in one RMD 1690 chassis. Each ALM 3268 modem can be controlled independently from the chassis' easy-to-use menu-driven front panel or from the Racal-Datacom CMS network management system. Both the ALM 3239 and the ALM 3268 will be compatible, if not compliant, with the new CCITT V.FAST standard now being developed with issuance expected next year. These units have the complete feature set of the ALM 3223 described above plus additional standard features such as Down Line Loading (DLL) capabilities and real-time clock applications. With DLL capabilities, enhancements and upgrades to the unit can be made by software, rather than requiring hardware (firmware) changes. That means fast, worry-free, convenient upgrade and services responses, even at remote sites by means of the RS-232 port of the modem with a disk or file transfer using a telephone line or by the CMS network management system. Some of the real-time clock applications include allowing the user to disable call-out capabilities during specific times, enabling the modem to provide network management trouble-ticket reports in the event of power failures, and the ability to set the modem in "sleep" mode between specific hours in order to prevent unauthorized use and to conserve power consumption. List price for the fully featured ALM 3239 is $1,795 with product availability in November. The central site ALM 3268 will list for $3,295 and be available in January. The ALM Series joins Racal's full line of leased line and dial analog and digital access products.
