PITTSFORD, NY, July 15, 1992 - Microlytics, Inc. announced today that Apple Computer will be bundling The Random House Encyclopedia, Microlytics' best-selling electronic encyclopedia, on Macintosh computers shipped to the higher education market through campus resellers during the back-to-school season. The Random House Encyclopedia is the only electronic encyclopedia on the market which does not require a CD-ROM device. Apple will be electronically transferring the Encyclopedia directly to the hard disk, prior to shipment. The Encyclopedia allows users to look up information on virtually any subject, without having to know which entry to look in. It greatly improves the utility of information over print, and can be used by students to enhance the use of printed encyclopedias. For example, if a student cannot remember the name of the philosopher of ancient Athens who carried a lantern around at midday, searching for an honest man, they can search for "honest" and "man," or "philosopher" and "lantern," etc., and find "Diogenes" in seconds. If you can't remember who said "Eureka," enter it, and you are instantly informed that it was Archimedes, sitting in his bathtub, who first discerned the principles of water displacement, and rose from the tub and ran through the street, yelling "Eureka!" having forgotten to dress, and earning his place in history. The entry for the town in Kansas is also revealed. Entering "baseball" finds not only baseball, but 67 entries relating to baseball, including "Hank Aaron," "Grover Cleveland," and even "amyotrophic lateral sclerosis," better known as "Lou Gehrig's disease." By having this tremendous power, students and teachers have access to information at their fingertips, while they are composing papers, tests, or just browsing. The indexes of large printed encyclopedias do not allow this degree of cross reference and look up assistance. The Random House Electronic Encyclopedia can help students master the art of cross referencing and help tackle multi-volume printed encyclopedias found in homes and libraries. "Research done at Bell Laboratories in the 1980's demonstrated that a printed index would have to be as large, or larger, than the printed information being indexed, in order to provide the powerful cross reference and concordance capability offered automatically and seamlessly in an electronic index. This is impractical in printed form, and would be both daunting and expensive," explained Mike Weiner, president of Microlytics. The powerful cross referencing and indexing capability used in the Microlytics software program was originally developed at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center, which developed a search utility called "Word Nerd" to provide automatic electronic information retrieval like that found in The Random House Encyclopedia. Microlytics holds the exclusive license to this powerful technology, and uses it in both its own products, and in products it develops for software publishers and information providers, on an OEM basis. Microlytics has sold over 140,000 copies of The Random House Encyclopedia, making it by far the best-selling electronic Encyclopedia on the market, and one of the best-selling electronic books ever published. "With the potentially large market commanded by Apple, there should be many more licensed Random House Encyclopedia users before year end," Weiner predicted. The Company also publishes the Word Finder thesaurus, Strunk and White's Elements of Style, The Berlitz Interpreter and GOfer, a text retrieval utility. Microlytics has an ongoing development relationship with Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC), and has developed several proprietary technologies, including high compression text software, working with the renowned research facility. Microlytics is a subsidiary of SelecTronics which is 38%-owned by Xerox Corporation.
