LEAD Technologies, Inc. (Charlotte, NC) announces a 32-bit protected mode version of its image file compression, conversion and management software that boasts amazingly fast performance among its many enhancements. It is some eight times faster than current LEADVIEW(TM) software packages, themselves considered quite speedy. It can accomplish on-the-fly image file compression or decompression to the screen, printer or a file. It builds in direct support for a number of sophisticated printers, including LaserJet, encapsulated Postscript and PaintJet; and adds many new image file standards, including one-bit CCITT fax files. LEADVIEW/32 will be available 3Q for $495 (all prices suggested US resale at participating resellers; inquiries invited). LEADVIEW/32 can handle extremely large images (unlimited image size) at high speeds, offers compression ratios up to more than 200:1, performs lossless compressions at ratios in the teens, and performs typical image file decompressions (1 MB 24-bit .TGA image on a 486SX/20 PC) in about one second. It supports both its own (.CMP) proprietary high-performance compression standard and those of JPEG. It adds support for scanned (1-bit image) documents with CCITT Group III and Group IV plus LEAD Image Document compression; it can store a typical fax page in about 3.5 KB. Other image compression solutions that provide similar speeds require adjunctive hardware adapters, cost more and compress less robustly. LEADVIEW/32 offers three user interface options: a stand-alone menu-driven application (with a simple editor that can convert, scale, resize, flip, rotate and reverse images), a TSR that works from inside most graphics applications, and command-line (or batch file) utility-style operation. It handles all popular image file formats, including compressions using either of two (JFIF and JTIF) JPEG-compliant methods, but its own CMP extended compression file format delivers much smaller file sizes and far superior restored-image quality. LEADVIEW/32 also works with TGA (8-bit grey scale, 8-bit color map, 16/24/32-bit color), PCX (8-bit grey scale, 8-bit color map), GIF (8-bit grey scale, 8-bit color map), TIFF (8-bit grey scale, 8-bit color map, 24-bit color), BMP (Windows and Presentation Manager 4/8-bit color map, 24-bit color), JFF (JPEG JFIF File Interchange Format, which extends as JPG), JTF (JPEG TIF) and CMP (proprietary LEAD Technologies format) files. It supports such Truecolor cards as the Truevision Targa, Targa+ and Vista graphics cards, plus many of the Hi-color VGA cards carrying RAM DACs and most VGA and SVGA cards.
