IRVINE, Calif., July 24, 1992 -- Let the games begin! While Barcelona is hosting the Olympics, London will be the site of the fourth annual International Computer Olympiad to be held August 5-11 at the Park Lane Hotel. Organized by Computer Olympiad Ltd. and sponsored by AST Europe, the Olympiad will feature more than 100 world-renowned artificial intelligence programmers, pitted against each other in a competitive series of computer games to determine whose software technology reigns supreme. Olympiad participants will enter their own versions of software game programs -- including Chess, Scrabble, Bridge and Othello -- to compete against each other. Highly sophisticated programs, such as chess, will actually play at the World Champion level. Participants merely input program moves, leaving strategy entirely to AI. "We are supporting the Computer Olympiad because of its substantial contribution to advancements in computer technology, a philosophy which has always been at the heart of AST," says Rod Rodericks, Managing Director European Operations. "The competition provokes software advances by bringing together the world's most innovative computer intellects." Although the Olympiad is fun and games, its ultimate goal is to utilize what is learned and apply that technology to real world applications. In Moscow for example, ex-World Chess Champion, Mikahal Botwinnik uses olympic-proven technology to create a smooth and efficient-running power station. "Just as racing has enhanced the performance of automobiles," Graham Hopper, UK General Manager AST Europe Limited, illustrated, "competitive intellectual games, such as those played at the Computer Olympiad, will enable development of more effective and efficient business software programs." An international academic conference on advancements made in artificial intelligence will also be held concurrent with the Olympiad. The forum allows for an exchange of ideas and advancements in AI programming. In past years, conference topics have discussed game playing hardware systems, database-driven programs and concepts for writing an unbeatable Bridge program.
