CONGRUENT CORP. PORTS LOW-COST DEVELOPER TOOLS TO WINDOWS NT SAN FRANCISCO, July 6, 1992 Congruent Corporation today announced it will lower the cost of developing application programs for Microsoft Windows NT by making available NT versions of the GNU programming tools popular with UNIX developers. Retail price for ToolBuster, a suite of more than 50 programming tools, is $199, including source code allowing unlimited reproduction rights. Congruent has ported programs in the GNU UNIX-compatible software system to the NT platform. Included in ToolBuster are RCS, a source code control system, and GNU Emacs, a highly regarded text editor tailored for program development requirements. Congruent will market ToolBuster to independent software vendors and others developing applications for Microsoft Windows NT. "Programmers familiar with only with DOS programming tools will welcome the added functionality of ToolBuster, while UNIX programmers will find the support theyexpect in a 32-bit programming system," said Art Kreitman, president of Congruent. Lower Development Costs, Reduce Development Time "ToolBuster attacks the high cost of development on two fronts," said Kreitman. "First, it provides more than 50 popular GNU programming tools in one package. Second, since no license is required for ToolBuster, one purchase can be duplicated for use by any number of programmers." "The availability of high-performance programming tools such as ToolBuster is key to our software developers' success. ToolBuster will help NT programmers have their applications shrink-wrapped and ready to go as the operating system enters filan release. Programmers who are accustomed to using GNU tools on UNIX will feel right at home," said Brian Moran, Technical Evangelist, Microsoft Developer Relations Group. ToolBuster can be ordered directly from Congruent for delivery this summer. Retail price is $199. Delivery will be timed to coincide with the availability of NT developer kits, expected from Microsoft in July. Support for ToolBuster is available from Congruent. In accordance with copyrights on GNU software held by the Free Software Foundation, source code is included with the programs, which will be disributed on CD-ROM. Congruent Corporation develops systems, graphics, and imaging software for OEMs and systems integrators. Key products are Asian language support and multimedia extensions for Windows display drivers and the X Imaging Extension (XIE) for workstations and X terminals. OEM relationships with popular hardware vendors put Congruent software into more than half of the Window-based personal computers sold last year. The company, founded in 1987, is privately held.
