SEPTEMBER 21, 1992, MOBILE, AL -- XANTE Corporation introduces the Accel-a-Writer 8100, a high resolution, high performance laser printer capable of printing up to 11"x17"/A3 size pages. Based on Canon's 8 page per minute LBP-BX print engine, it will support true 600 x 600 dpi resolution and will be upgradable to both 800 x 800 and 960 x 960 dpi. The Accel-a-Writer 8100 is built around a high performance controller architecture with the AMD 29000 RISC processor and Xante's Advanced Memory Management schemes to boost performance. The printer will ship with 12 MB RAM and can be upgraded to 64 MB. Serial, Parallel, and AppleTalk interfaces are included and all can be active simultaneously. A SCSI interface is also provided to allow for hard disk attachment. The Accel-a-Writer 8100 will be the first printer to offer PostScript Level 2 compatibility with Phoenix Technologies' PhoenixPage Level 2 emulation. A TrueType font scaler will also be resident on the controller for a more seamless integration into Windows, Macintosh System 7 environments. "We are happy to be part of the first implementation of PhoenixPage Level 2," said Xante's President and Founder, Robert Ross. "With Level 2 compatibility, TrueType support, and Xante's innovations, the Accel-a-Writer 8100 is one of the most versatile printers available. I believe it is an excellent product to showcase Phoenix Technologies' new code." The Accel-a-Writer 8100, due to begin shipping in October, will initially have PostScript Level 1 compatible code. An upgrade to Level 2 will be available later in the quarter at no charge. "Our Level 2 implementation is currently being beta tested," said Ross. "The Accel-a-Writer 8100 offers many advantages as a Level 1 product and once testing has been completed, our customers will be upgraded at no charge. This will help ensure full support of Level 2 applications as they become available." HP PCL IV emulation is also included and printer resident code allows automatic switching. Xante's Virtual Disk Technology is supported on the Accel-a-Writer 8100 and allows users to download up to 30 fonts permanently on the printer in addition to the 35 fonts that come standard. Virtual Disk Technology makes use of Flash ROM on the controller and the Accel-a-Writer 8100 ships with 512K and can be upgraded to 1 MB. "Virtual Disk Technology has been our most popular innovation," according to Marty Kennedy, Xante's Vice President of Marketing. "Allowing users to download 15 or 30 of their favorite fonts permanently to Accel-a-Writer controllers has added a new level of flexibility and convenience that can't be matched by our competitors." In addition to 11x17/A3 and high resolution capabilities, the BX engine offers strong paper handling features. The printer ships with an input capacity of 350 sheets from two sources and an output capacity of 250 sheets, face down. An optional third input source is available and can be configured to hold as many as 500 sheets. "The BX's paper handling and high resolution capabilities coupled with Xante's controller technology and aggressive pricing strategy will make the Accel-a-Writer 8100 hard to overlook," said Kennedy. "We will continue to push the envelope of technology to set our products apart from the rest and take advantage of pricing afforded by selling direct. The Accel-a-Writer 8100 epitomizes this concept." PRINTER FEATURES High Resolution - The Xante Accel-a-Writer 8100 provides true 600 x 600 dpi resolution for near typeset quality output. The 600 dpi is enhanced with ultra fine toner to make text edges smoother, line art sharper and graphics cleaner. The resolution can be nearly doubled with an 800 x 800 dpi upgrade. This upgrade will provide 640,000 dots per square inch versus 360,000 at 600 dpi. A 960 x 960 dpi upgrade which provides 921,600 dots per square inch is also available. "The spot size is much smaller on the BX than previous laser printers and the toner holds up remarkably well at higher resolutions," said Ross. "At 600 dpi, the output is great, but at 800 and 960 dpi, it is noticeably better." The Accel-a-Writer 8100's near typeset quality output is well suited for final product uses such as newsletters, on demand documentation, and engineering drawings. Xante's Advanced Gray Scale Technology is supported and enhances the quality of gray scales by over 40 percent. Paper Handling - The Accel-a-Writer 8100 supports two input sources in its base configuration. A fold-down tray offers a 100 sheet input capacity and can support page sizes up to 11 "x17" . The second source is a paper feed unit which supports the letter or 11"x17" trays which come standard and has a 250 sheet capacity. An optional third input source is available and can be configured to hold up to 500 sheets. PostScript Level 2 Compatibility - The Accel-a-Writer will be the first product to ship with Phoenix Technologies' PhoenixPage Level 2 emulation. Level 2 PostScript offers several benefits, including enhanced file and memory management schemes, data compression, forms support, pattern caching and composite font support. Phoenix's Level 2 emulation is the result of the evolving Level 1 emulation. TrueType Font Support - The Accel-a-Writer 8100 will offer added flexibility with a resident TrueType font scaler. Windows and Macintosh System 7 users will have the benefit of not having to convert their TrueType fonts to Type 1 when using PostScript, resulting in greater overall printing performance. HP PCL IV and Automatic Emulation Switching - The Accel-a-Writer 8100 will ship with PCL IV emulation for line printing and other non-PostScript applications. Also included is resident code that allows automatic switching between the emulations. Context switching is supported, enabling users to preserve the state of each emulation when switching occurs. Download fonts, programs, and macros remain after a switch has occurred. High Performance Architecture - The Xante Accel-a-Writer 8100 makes use of the AMD 29000 RISC processor and a standard 12 MB RAM for increased processing speeds. RAM is expandable to 64 MB with user-installable SIMM modules. Xante also incorporates a sophisticated memory management scheme to take advantage of varying resolutions and Dual Page Processing which allows one page to print while another is being processed. Permanent Font Storage - Xante 's proprietary Virtual Disk Technology allows the user to permanently download up to 30 fonts directly on the controller (in addition to the standard 35 already resident) without the use of an external SCSI hard drive. Once downloaded, these fonts will function completely as printer resident. Users can also change the fonts stored depending on specific project requirements. For those who want to store more than thirty fonts, the Accel-a-Writer products include a SCSI port for an external hard drive. The Accel-a-Writer 8100 ships with a standard of .5 MB of Flash ROM for storage of up to 15 fonts and is upgradable to 1 MB of Flash ROM for storage of up to 30 fonts. Simultaneous Interfacing- RS-232 serial, Centronics Parallel, and AppleTalk interfaces are included and can all be active simultaneously for seamless, cross platform support. SCSI disk interface is also included. TARGET MARKETS & APPLICATIONS The Accel-a-Writer 8100 will be targeted at several different markets that share common interests: high resolution output, extensive paper handling capabilities, fast processing and cross platform flexibility. The principle market that will be attracted to the Accel-a-Writer 8100 will be the growing desktop publishing market. Service bureaus, print shops, and ad agencies will make use of the high resolution capabilities which provide smooth text, line art and high quality scanned and other halftone images. The large page size support will provide flexibility in full page bleeds and 2 page spreads. Both large and small corporations with a mixture of Macs and PCs will benefit from the interface flexibility. Newsletters, documentation, product brochures, and other forms of literature sent outside the company will be greatly improved with the print quality of the Accel-a-Writer 8100, often eliminating the necessity of out of house printing. Engineering environments will make use of the large page format for printing drawings, check plots and schematics. The higher resolution will provide finer, sharper detail so that small print can be more easily read and understood.
