Sept. 14, 1992 -- SUNRISE, FLA. -- Racal-Datacom announces its smallest modem, the Racal-Datacom ALM 3226 facsimile-cellular-data modem for laptop and personal computers. It handles computer data requiring speeds from 75 bps to 14.4 Kbps (V.32bis). The modem features V.42 error correction and V.42bis compression for asynchronous data transmission up to 57.6 Kbps; facsimile Group 3 Class 1 and 2 data transmission over cellular or a standard telephone line; and for cellular data transmission provides MNP- 10 error correction protocol, as well as Racal's cellular option. "This modem is an ideal solution for the busy person on the go, as well as for desktop users wanting its small yet feature-rich footprint, and the varied power capabilities it offers," said Jullo Siberio, Racal-Datacom Division Vice President for Analog Products. The fist-sized modem can be plugged directly into the serial port of a laptop without requiring a DTE cable. This simplifies connections and makes it easier to carry the small modem. Standard power capabilities consist of a 9-volt battery and a transformer-power cable to use with a wall outlet. Options are vehicle cigarette lighter adapter and rechargeable battery pack The ALM 3226 comes with the Racal-Datacom Modem Manager feature, which allows the modem to be configured, diagnosed and controlled remotely via Racal-Datacom Communications Management Series (CMS) 400 or an ASCII terminal. Modem Manager also provides call-back security feature. Modem Manager benefits include the ability to strap (adjust the parameters of) a distant modem from a home office site for the optimum speed and configuration to be used for that transmission. Modem Manager also monitors password security to prevent unauthorized user access. It can interface with computers running communications software based on the Hayes "AT' command set. When combined with the CMS 400 and the RMD 3264 central site dual density modem, the telecommunications manager can control. monitor and report on more than 32,000 modems located anywhere in the world. CMS is the network management component of Racal-Datacom's RSA (Racal Strategic Architecture), which assures that Racal products interoperate under common network management, and are supported by comprehensive services. As an integral part of RSA, the CMS system manages Racal-Datacom's entire networking product line -- the broadest range of networking products in the industry -- which includes ail types of devices from analog modems to T- 1 /E- 1 multiplexers to LAN internetworking devices. The CMS system also adheres to industry management standards including Simple Network Management Protocol. The hand-held ALM 3226's measurements are 1 inch deep, 2 1/2 inches wide and 5 1/4 inches long. List price is $750 with shipments beginning in October. ALM 3226 meets V.32bis, V.32, V.22bis, V.22 and V.21 data transmission standards; V.17, V.27ter and V.29 facsimile transmission (Class 1 and 2); and Bell 212A and 103 standards. Previously announced modems in the new slimline ALM series are the ALM 3223, meeting the V.32bis (14.4 Kbps data speed) standard; and the standalone ALM 3239 and the ALM 3268 dual density central site card, operating at speeds up to 19.2 Kbps in point-to-point two/four wire leased line or dial applications. The ALM 3239 and 3268 will be compatible, if not compliant, with the new "V.Fast" standard now being developed by the CCITT with issuance of that standard expected next year. The ALM series joins Racal's full line of leased line and dial analog and digital access products.
