LAGUNA HILLS, CA, Sept. 14,1992--Network Software Associates, Inc. (NSA) today introduced Elite/ 400 for Windows and Elite/400DSP for Windows, two new SNA software emulators for communications between IBM compatible PCs running Windows and an IBM AS/400 midrange computer. Both emulate IBM's 5250 family of terminals, supporting up to 32 concurrent sessions and file transfer facilities under Microsoft's Windows Graphical User Environment (GUI). Elite/400 also provides printer emulation. "Our Elite/400 emulators are extremely easy-to-use Windows connectivity packages," said NSA President and CEO Zak Kong. "The emulators come pre-configured for immediate out-of-the-box operation. They allow PCs to operate cooperatively with AS/400s in a client-server distributed processing environment. PC users can now easily access programs and data on their AS/400 midrange systems as intuitively as they access resources on their local Windows-based PC." Elite/400 runs in conjunction with IBM's AS/400 Personal Computer Support (PCS/400) software. Implemented as an intelligent workstation, it takes advantage of PCS/400's Organizer function. It also includes a file transfer program which lets users download AS/400 files to the PC and upload PC files to the AS/400. Elite/400DSP is a Display Station Pass-through (DSP) version designed for users who do not require full PCS/400 functionality. Both new emulators communicate over 802.2, SDLC and twinax links, so customers do not need to replace current wiring to take advantage of Elite/400. They also communicate via NSA's new Elite/400 LAN Gateway for LAN-to-AS/400 connectivity (see separate news release) and Novell's NetWare for SAA Gateway. When used with NetWare for SAA, Elite/400DSP totally eliminates the need for IBM's PCS/400 software on the host and client PCs. For improved efficiency and speed, both emulators encapsulate the 5250 protocol within an LU6.2/APPC data stream. Additional features include rapid screen updates, a timesaving ShortCuts facility, Windows Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE), auto font scaling, auto windows sizing, clipboard copy and paste, configurable keyboard maps, context sensitive help, and flexible printer support. "Elite/400 has been designed to very closely emulate IBM's 5250 family to ease our customers' migration from IBM terminal to PCs, " said Mr. Smith. "All screen attributes have been painstakingly duplicated. For example, if a given indicator blinks on an IBM terminal, Elite/400 blinks as well." To improve application response times, Elite/400 has been optimized for rapid screen updates. "Our emulator has proven to be substantially faster than alternative solutions," Mr. Smith added. The ShortCuts feature is a floating Windows box containing user-defined host functions. This productivity-enhancing feature allows an entire set of AS/400 functions to be executed via a single mouse click. Windows DDE Server support allows other Windows programs such as Excel, Word and WordPerfect to read data directly from the AS/400. For example, a user can write an Excel macro that pulls down information from the AS/400 via Elite/400 for processing within an Excel chart. Elite/400 supports a wide range of printer types, including IBM letter quality, dot matrix, and laser printers. Configuring a printer is a simple, three-button process. Printer emulation features include page rotation, output reduction, font selection, graphic control panel, text justification and bin selection. Available October 1, Elite/400DSP is priced at $295, while Elite/400 is $395. Network licenses are available from $2,295.
