LAGUNA HILLS, CA, Sept. 14,1992--Network Software Associates, Inc. (NSA) today unveiled the Elite 400 LAN Gateway, an SNA communications gateway for IBM AS/400 midrange computer access by PCs connected to Token-Ring, Ethernet, or Arcnet LANs. The new gateway can be used on both large and small LANs, supporting a wide range of LAN protocols and network operating systems, including NetBIOS, Novell NetWare, NetWare Lite, and peer-oriented networks such as Artisoft's LANtastic and the impending Microsoft Workgroup for Windows software. The flexible Elite/400 LAN Gateway is ideal for heterogeneous, multi-vendor LAN environments. It supports client PCs running Windows or DOS based 5250 emulation software, including NSA's new Elite/400 and Elite/400DSP for Windows emulators (see separate news release). The gateway supports up to 128 downstream PC connections. "Our Elite/400 LAN Gateway has been implemented as an SNA Node Type 2.1 device supporting downstream PC clients running IBM's PCS/400 Router," said Russ Hertzberg, NSA's director of product marketing. "It provides an efficient and economical means to connect multiple PCs to an AS/400 for advanced client-server computing applications." The Elite/400 LAN Gateway runs on an 80286 or faster PC with an upstream host communications adapter and a downstream LAN adapter. The upstream connection to the AS/400 can be either SDLC or IEEE 802.2. The Elite/400 LAN Gateway has been optimized for use with client PCs running NSA's Elite/400 emulators. "In keeping with our philosophy of open standards and link-independent SNA, however, our gateway is compatible with other Windows and DOS based 5250 emulators such as Wall Data's RUMBA/400 and IBM's DOS Workstation Feature," said Mr. Hertzberg. "This is of particular importance to our customers with heterogeneous networks running emulators from different vendors." The gateway is based on a new set of NSA drivers encapsulating the PCS/400 APPC protocols (Startrtr.exe) within commonly-used LAN protocols such as NetBIOS and IPX/SPX. This provides for highspeed AS/400 connections by leveraging existing LAN protocols on existing LAN media. "The Elite/400 LAN Gateway is a very cost-effective AS/400 connectivity solution for LANs running peer-oriented operating systems such as LANtastic or entry-level Novell systems such as NetWare 2.X or NetWare Lite," Mr. Hertzberg continued. "We offer a very effective solution for the large install base of NetWare 2.X and the growing install base of peer oriented PC networks." For the past four years, NSA has been marketing its popular AdaptSNA LAN Gateway for LAN-to-mainframe connectivity, supporting multiple SNA protocols such as 3270, LU6.2/APPC and 3770/RJE. With the new Elite/400 LAN Gateway, NSA now provides its SNA enterprise computing customers with a full range of gateway solutions for both LAN-to-mainframe and LAN-to-midrange connectivity. The Elite/400 LAN Gateway and the AdaptSNA LAN Gateway can coexist on the same LAN, allowing the PC user to access an AS/400 application and a System/370 application simultaneously. Using NSA's new HLLAPI Toolkit for Windows, it becomes a relatively simple task to create a Windows-based interface that allows a PC user to gather data from an AS/400 and a System/370 host and display them on a single PC screen. The Elite/400 LAN Gateway will be available for customer delivery on October 30, 1992. Prices range from $595 for a four-user gateway up to $3,995 for a 1 28-user gateway.
