San Francisco, Calif., August 3, 1992--Gupta Technologies announced its commitment to Microsoft's Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) application programming interface (API) at its developers conference here today, as well as connectivity to AS/400 and Informix databases via its SQLRouter connectivity software. The announcements significantly broaden Gupta's interoperability strategy, and illustrate the company's two-pronged approach to provide maximum connectivity between its database tools, servers and other enterprise data sources. "Our interoperability strategy is designed to bring the benefits of client-server technology and our Windows-based graphical tools to users of all industry-standard SQL databases," said Gene Shklar, Vice President of Marketing for Gupta Technologies. "What's more, ODBC promises to increase customers' options in connecting applications developed using other vendors' tools to our own SQLBase high-performance database server for PC networks." John Lazarus, Vice President, Systems Strategy, Microsoft Corporation said, "The 90's are the decade of client-server, open systems and interoperability, and Gupta has always been at the forefront of these trends. Now, by supporting the ODBC standard, Gupta has significantly broadened customers' client-server product choices, as well as furthered the position of networked PCs as platforms for mission-critical client-server applications." Susan Nurse, Market Development Manager, Client-Server Products, Informix Software said, "Our strategy is to offer customers the 'best in class' graphical client tools interfaced to our high performance servers so that they can create the best client-server database management systems tailored to their specific needs and requirements." Gupta's Interoperability Strategy The two-pronged approach of Gupta's interoperability strategy includes: 1. Connectivity for Gupta tools to all major SQL data sources. With today's announcement Gupta's SQLWindows and Quest tools will connect to AS/400, Informix and ODBC-enabled databases. PC users can now access data in an even broader selection of database servers from Microsoft Windows PCs. Informix and IBM's AS/400 database are leading SQL database servers in organizations of all sizes around the world. IBM's AS/400 is the most widely-used midrange platform for business applications. Informix's database servers, INFORMIX-OnLine and SE, run on multiple hardware platforms that support the UNIX operating systems as well as DOS LANs. In addition to AS/400 and Informix, SQLRouters or SQLGateways are also available for IBM's DB2, ORACLE Server, IBM's OS/2 Database Manager, NetWare SQL, HP ALLBASE/SQL, and the Microsoft/Sybase SQL Server. ODBC. Gupta will enhance its SQLWindows and Quest products to support other database vendors' client-side ODBC drivers, thereby giving customers another option for connecting Gupta's tools to their favorite database servers. Microsoft's ODBC is based on the call-level API recommended by the SQL Access Group, an industry standards consortium of which Gupta is a member. 2. Facilitating connectivity by a wide range of vendors' tools to SQLBase. Gupta continues to support its own open API for mission-critical applications. Support for ODBC provides an option for applications to use SQLBase from a standards-based API. The combination of Gupta's interface and the ODBC interface makes client-server more attractive for more applications than ever before. Gupta already has over 100 third-party front-end tools for SQLBase, and an ODBC driver will substantially expand that number. Pricing And Availability AS/400 and Informix. Initially, SQLRouter for AS/400 and for Informix will provide connectivity for applications developed using SQLWindows; support for Quest will follow. SQLRouter for AS/400 will ship in September; SQLRouter for Informix will ship in the fourth quarter of 1992. Both are priced at $250.00 per client. ODBC. Gupta will include the ODBC API client driver for Windows as a standard feature of all versions of SQLBase (MS DOS, OS/2, NLM and Unix) in the first half of 1993. Availability of support by Gupta tools for other vendors' ODBC drivers will be announced at a later date. About Gupta Technologies Gupta Technologies, Inc., founded in 1984, is the leading vendor of client-server database software for PC networks. Gupta's SQLBase Server (NLM) recently established a new performance standard for PC client-server databases. SQLWindows has been instrumental in the growth of applications developed for client-server networks. Gupta's Quest is a data access, query and reporting tool for end-users, and SQLNetwork is a family of software products (SQLGateway and SQLRouter) for connecting Gupta tools and servers to other server data sources, including DB2, ORACLE, Informix, AS/400 Database and others.
