The demonstration has the following menu tree: Etak MapDraw Demo | | ------------------------------------------------ | | | | ------ ------ ------- --------- | File | | Edit | | Mouse | | Display | ------ ------ ------- --------- | | | | | | | | -------- ------ ----------------- --------------------- | Open | | Copy | | Center map | | Refresh | | Close | ------ | Zoom in | | Geocode address | | Export | | Zoom out | | Include center cross | | Quit | | Nearest Feature | ---------------------- | About | ----------------- -------- These options are briefly explained below : File ---- The "File" menu allows you to open or close a database, export the current view as a PostScript file, quit the application, or display the "about" box. "Open" The purpose of the "Open" option is to allow you to pick a database for map display. On clicking on the "Open" option in the "File" menu, a dialog box comes up with a scrollable list of .MAP files and the directories in the current directory. You can select the database by navigating through the file system by clicking on the entries in the list. After selecting the desired database, you can click on the "Open" button in the dialog menu, or click on "Cancel" if the desired database is not found. After you click "Open" in the dialog box, the demo program will open the specified database and display a small region of the map at the lowest level of detail. You can change the map region and the level of detail in the displayed map using various other options described below. "Close" will close the current database. "Export" will export the current view of the map to a PostScript file whose name you specify. This file can be downloaded to a PostScript compatible printer. It is not currently compatible with draw or paint programs that manipulate PostScript files. "Quit" will quit the application. "About" gives the version and copyright information about the MapDemo program. Copy ---- The "Edit" option of the "Copy" menu allows you to copy a bitmap representation of the current map view to the windows clipboard. You may then "Paste" that bitmap into another application, such as windows paint. Mouse ----- The "Mouse" menu allows you to set the function of the mouse cursor to any of Center map, Zoom in, Zoom out, or Nearest feature. Note that when the map is drawn, not every feature displayed will be labeled, depending on the density of the features. "Zoom In" allows you to zoom in on a region of the map. To do this, click on the "Zoom In" option in the "Mouse" menu. The mouse cursor will change to a crosshair. Follow this by positioning the cursor at the upper left corner of the region of interest. Keeping the left mouse button down, drag the cursor to the lower right corner of the region of interest. Release the mouse button and a zoomed in view of the map will be displayed. The displayed map is centered at the center of the zoom box. The map is scaled such that the height of the map region in the zoom box fits into the display window. The width is adjusted somewhat to fit the display window. "Zoom out" allows you to zoom out a region of the map. To do this, click on the "Zoom Out" option in the "Display" menu. The mouse cursor will change to a crosshair. Now position the cursor at the upper left corner of the zoom box. Keeping the left mouse button down, drag the cursor to the lower right corner of the region of interest. Release the mouse button, a zoomed out view of the map will be displayed. The displayed map is centered at the center of the zoom box. In the case of Zoom In, the height of the map region enclosed by the zoom box is expanded to fit the display window. In the case of Zoom Out, the currently displayed map region is scaled so that height of the current map can fit into the display area with height equal to that of the zoom box. "Center map" allows you to change the center point of the map, effectively letting you pan across the map. When you select this option, the mouse cursor will change to a diagonal arrow. This is the default state of the mouse cursor when a map is first loaded. "Nearest feature" allows you to click on the map and see the name of the nearest feature (point or line) in the message window below the map. When you select this option, the mouse cursor will change to a vertical arrow. Display ------- The "Display" menu lets you redraw the screen, overlay a center cross marker on the screen, or geocode (find the location of) an address. "Refresh" will redraw the current map view. "Geocode address" will bring up a dialog box asking for the various elements of an address. Press the tab key to move between fields in this dialog box. You do not need to fill in all parts of an address for the Geocoding function to work. If there are multiple matches for your input, you will be asked to select one from a list. Once you geocode to a location, the map scale zooms in to at least 1.2 miles. The location is marked by a 'pushpin' which will continue to display while you zoom or re-center the map. Try geocoding to Number: 1600 Street: pennsylvania or to Number: (press tab) Street: (lincoln memorial) "Include center cross" will, if selected, display a cross at the center of the map after it is drawn.
