You roll out of the rack and are greeted by a nice, clear, sunny fall morning. The temperature is 50 degrees Fahrenheit, and the winds are calm. Perfect! During the past two days you have been gathering and packing all the gear you will need into your boat. You've checked to make sure nothing has been overlooked. After one final check, you decide that a flannel shirt, jeans and tennis shoes will be sufficient. Then you're on your way. Four hours later you're out in the middle of the lake. A stiff breeze has been blowing for about the last hour, and you are getting cold. You check the boat's thermometer and see that the temperature has remained a stable 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Why, then, are you so cold? WIND CHILL, that's why. Many people do not pay much attention to it, but it can cause an uncomfortable day on the lake. It can also kill. The accompaning wind-chill chart shows how much colder it feels as the wind speed increases. In the story above, the temperature was 50 degrees Faren- heit. Let's say the wind picked up to 15 mph. Looking at the chart, the person in the boat was experiencing 36 degree Fahrenheit temperatures wearing only a flannel shirt, jeans and tennis shoes! It's no wonder he was cold. Temperatures can vary drastically when you are working or playing outdoors. A good rule of thumb is to always carry along more clothing than you THINK you will need. You can always take clothes off, but you can't put on some- thing you don't have. WIND CHILL, of course, can affect anyone. The small boat crew on shrimp boat duty in 50 degree temperatures needs to be prepared as well. -Pause- [C]ontinue, [N]onStop, [S]top?
