LANtastic NOS 4.0 Technical Bulletin: Tecmar Tape Drives and QT Quality Tape Backup Software v1.2x 9/12/91 JAG I. Overview The QT tape backup software from Tecmar, Inc was tested using the Tecmar QT-250es External 250MB SCSI tape drive and an Adaptec SCSI interface adapter. Since the software interacts directly with the tape drive hardware, each computer on the LAN which will be backed up must be configured as a server. The general procedure is for the machine with the tape drive attached to login to each server and backup the server's files to the local tape drive. II. Installation Follow the manufacturer's instructions for installing the tape drive hardware and software. The tape backup machine may be configured as a LANtastic workstation or server, depending on the user's preference. Once the drive and software are installed, you must configure them for the LAN. To do this, change to the QT directory and bring up the software. Select the "Change Setup Options" (F5) option and press F1 for the "Change Configuration Values" section. Choose the "Network type" parameter and set it to "Other." Then select the "Swapfile drive" option and set it to a local (attached to he tape drive machine) hard disk drive. Press ESC and answer 'Y' to the "Keep these values?" prompt. III. Program Execution The QT software can be run in menu, command line, or automatic backup modes. All modes can be used with LANtastic. Note that the menu mode requires a minimum of 512K base RAM to run. All backups should be done as file-by-file backups, image backups are not possible on network drives. Drives on servers that are to be backed up must be NET USEd before running the backup software. If the backup is configured to wait for open files to close before backing them up, it is recommended that the network control directory (\LANTASTI.NET by default) on each server be excluded from the backup. See the QT Software documentation for information on excluding directories from the backup. If the backup is configured to skip open files, it is not necessary to exclude the servers' network control directories. IV. Compatibility Notes The QT Software v1.2x is currently incompatible with the LANtastic LANCache program. If LANCache is normally used on the machine to which the Tecmar drive is attached, it must be removed from memory before starting QT. This can be done by running LANCache with the /remove switch from the DOS command line or by rebooting the computer and bringing it back up without LANCache installed. This bulletin will be updated once compatibility problems are resolved. V. Conclusion Tecmar, Inc.'s QT Software v1.2x is compatible with LANtastic NOS v4.0 with the exception of the above Compatibility Note.
